Random people, that would be me, jack of all trades, master of none although bridge design/construction is not in my league by any means but the technical discussion in this thread fascinates me and I hope the thread does not get derailed.

My favourite times on Beyond are when people debate the merits of someone's opinion/ideas, not what their credentials are. Certainly there are some interesting ideas/opinions here.

The point of a social forum is discussion, it's kind of the point. Whenever the usual guys (we all know who they are) get on here going "yea, but what do YOU know?" really kills the vibe here.

The NTSB has released an investigation update for the Florida bridge collapse:

TL;DR in the days after the bridge was placed onto its piers, large cracks appeared at the interface point of Columns 11/12 and the bridge deck. The concrete and reinforcing steel in this area appeared to be sound and met design spec, but the cracks formed nonetheless. The NTSB has not released a final cause of failure yet.
