    Default Honda 1.5T Engines

    Are these engines any good?

Are they a step back from the K series?

Parents are looking to get a CUV, CRV constantly ranked top of the pack, but they would keep it for probably 10+ years so if the 1.5T isnt what Honda used to be.. I might push them towards a Ravenous4

What are beyonds thoughts on Honda's little turbo engine?

Pretty sure these engines are highly problematic.

Drink coolant, no heat in the winter. Lots of engine replacements.

Quick google should scare you away.

Personally wouldn’t want to own one. Know multiple people with them, some are ok others have had issues, but they all do fairly low mileage.

Search Honda turbo dilution problem and how they solved it by software.

If you still want one, just make sure you don't do short trips in winter.

I have a 2023 Civic Si. I've not had any issues or oil dilution issues with the 1.5L engine as that's largely been corrected but my commute is not short so in the winter the engine always gets to temperature when I drive it. My issues are more with the car and build quality (interior rattles like a Subaru) and noise insulation as these new Civics are extremely noisy cars. Engine and transmission have been the best part of the car as it's feels very quick even though it's not fast and it's the first turbo engine I've ever owned that actually has great fuel economy. The issue is that the engines are not overbuilt and is pretty well maxed out at stock Si levels. As with say a Subaru engine, once you start modding, it's on borrowed time. I would say any late model Honda with this engine should be okay relative to any other turbocharged engines in the segment as long as you leave it stock but due to being turbocharged they will never be as reliable as Honda's NA engines of the past or present.

Jesus Christ, I had read a few things that were a bit concerning but this is escalating to alarming.

Maybe Ill tell her to get a mercedes or audi instead

What is my other option, a Rav4?

I don't think a Rogue, Santa Fe, or Subaru/Kia/Mitsu are great long term cars at this point either....

Rogue might actually be the best of that bunch (after Rav4)

RAV4 is tried and true but beware of the unsecure ECU problem and invite theieves.

Rogue is fine and aplenty. Nissan is suffering on the sales front right now.

I really like these but I think me ma' is hoping to grab one a few years old to save a bit of $$$

Not sure there are many used CX50's around with any real savings at the moment

Could lump the Rogue into the mix.

Rav4 feeling like the right direction at the moment...

She only drives 10,000 km a year so hybrid would be a no go

The 2.5L in the RAV4 is one of the most unrefined engines I have driven since the VQ37 in the 370Z. Feels like it's going to vibrate apart at higher RPM. I actually drove a 2022 RAV4 for a month when between vehicles and hated every minute of it. The only reason these things sell is on name alone as the product is mediocre at best.

CX-5? CX-50 is slightly lower and wider anyway.

There is plenty of used CX-5 around and last few years should be pretty solid.

I'm always impressed how nice Mazdas are when I got them as rentals.

yes...? Ours was great. It's got a completely different powertrain than the crv, if that's what you're getting at.

How often have you been changing your oil?

The car isn't that old that I have multiple oil changes but I typically wait until it gets around 20-30% oil life on the display. I think the maintenance reminder comes on at 15% oil life remaining. I think the CRV is superior to the RAV4 in almost every way but I don't know if anyone can tell you if the 1.5L is going to last 10+ years reliably because it's just not old enough. I don't see a lot of people on the Civic forums having engine issues with the newer models outside of valve cover leaks which is something that dogs the Type R 2.0L as well. If longevity is most important to you parents then RAV4 may be best because it's pretty typical low tech Toyota.

No, I like RDX's. Wonder if long term ownership cost would be much higher.. premium fuel, more fancy items to break, etc. Those new RDX's sure look sharp though

Good info. On the CRV side they'd be wanting one around 30-50k kms. Probably driving 10k kms a year. If the CRV can't last that long with timely maintance... well god damn it Honda

I'd be surprised if it was higher TCO. Premium fuel cost is a rounding error in the overall calculation, esp for someone that only drives 10k/yr. IIRC it doesn't have more fancy things to break (e.g., massaging seats or something?), just the same basic stuff (heated seats, nav, heated steering wheel) that a highly optioned rav4 would have

Cost to insure will be a bigger lever than premium vs regular I bet.
