    Default AMES Discount

    Hi
Does anyone know what kind of a discount contractors get at AMES?
The contractor I hired to finish my BSMT is telling me that he gets 20% off on the products (Tiles and Vinyl) from them. I find that little bit hard to believe. If any one has any info can you please share it?

    TIA

Looks like it is 40% discount. Based on the results from this forum.
I need to find a contractor who can get me that discount. LOL

I'm sure different contractors get different discount levels based on volume and other factors. If your contractor is smaller, they may really be getting only 20% and not the 40% you heard of. or they may be pocketing the difference, that's common too. The system is set up so the end-customer is kept in the dark.

I figured that different contractors will get different discount based on the purchase. The Contractor I am working with does work for builders so I would assume that his discount percentage is higher than the 20%. I am ok with him pocketing some of the discount.
Last night I counter offered him with 25% Off and he says he will get back to me today. Will see

Our typical tile discounts are generally around less 40, less 6. If he isn't making +/- 18 points on the supply cost on a little job like that then it isn't worth his time imo.

Yup! unless hes a good friend(even at that i wouldnt expect cost) you cant expect the guy to do the materials at cost.

I wasn't expecting my contractor to give me the material at cost.
In any case I was able to negotiate a revised discount with the contractor.
    Thanks everyone.

What a joke. Next time you have a contractor come over for a free estimate, just tell em straight, right off the bat, your ok with them making minimum wage, but not a cent more. That way you won't end up wasting anyone's time. AMES discount is 40%. Now you can go do your "thing"

    What a joke for sure
Don't know where you got the idea that,
    a) I was wasting contractors time
    b) I want to pay minimum wage
    c) I was going to do my 'Thing'

As for doing free estimates. It is the cost of doing business. I am not sure what type of work you do but in my line of work we do this all the time.
Anyways thanks for your feed back. Much appreciated.

No kidding! I do mid 6 figure estimating ALL the time, it's part of our business. Who the hell CHARGES for Estimates lololol, whenever I see someone advertise "Free Estimates" I know how small potato they are. If you can't afford the overhead of pricing a job (or make that seem like a perk in your advertising), I don't intend to work with you let alone hire you - can't stand the smell of nickel and dimers.

Glad you got a reasonable deal, I wasn't far off on the Ames discount it seems. I've got a guy who gathers our supply pricing for jobs, we also do that for "free" hahaha

buddy we all know what you were trying to do. don't deny it. your looking to squeeze every possible dollar out of this poor contractor your looking at hiring. your probably one of those guys that negotiates at the beginning of the deal, then again in the middle of the process, and then say your uncomfortable paying at the end because of this and that, and would like another discount. I assume you live in the N.E, dontcha!

If it were just the similar username and tone of posts that might be a coincidence but the grammar tells all lol
