Default We're probably getting the 2026 Olympics

A couple weeks ago, leaked update said that we've secured provincial and federal funding for a bid. Nenshi said nope, wrong report. Few councilors weren't happy that it's getting rammed down our throats.

Surprise surprise, today's news reports that we're getting the funding for the bid haha.

Oh well, at least we get an arena out of it. Going to be an expensive tax bill in the upcoming years. We're so getting played. Guess Nenshi wants to cement his legacy here at our expense by getting us the Olympics.

I always said the combined perfect storm of Nenshi and Trudeau would mean this was happening. Ffs.

I’m glad I can afford the tax hike, gonna be pretty shitty for most Calgarians though.

Too bad, maybe they’ll learn that there is a price tag attached to things.

why are they ripping down the ski jumps then? or is ski jumping not an event anymore?

They apparently don’t meet current requirements for jumping. Not sure where they would rebuild them though

Ski jumping would be held in Vancouver. I can't believe all the hate for a public rink and then somehow this is acceptable.

They definitely don't meet current requirements. A modern ski jump built at COP would basically have the landing zone on the highway - the sport has come a long way in 30 years.

Our ski jumps weren’t even appropriate in 88 due to our prevailing winds

There's still a tiny shred of hope, the media is saying that apparently federal/provincial funds are contingent on the results of a plebiscite. I'm pretty sure that most people don't want another Olympics here, hopefully enough of those people get out to vote no instead of just being apathetic towards voting.

The general consensus I've gotten from people has been that they would love to have the Olympics here. Just curious what your objections are. Cost?

This just means we are putting our name in the hat. I personally don’t think we’ll get it.

Not sure why they are bothering waiting until the last minute the bid application closes tomorrow (sat) I believe

    The hat is empty.

The rest of the world is wise to how stupid hosting the olympics is.

They didn’t wait until the last minute. They’re just telling us the last minute by pretending to make the decision last minute.

Is there any other serious bid for this olympics? I was under the impression that nobody in north american was stupid enough to host these events any more. Sure they are fun parties, but the costs are insane.

From what I've read, I get the impression from all the "coaching" and relaxing of requirements the IOC has been doing for us, they want us to host and the whole bidding process is just a formality.

    http://calgaryherald.com/news/local-...r-olympic-bids

Dubi said the IOC has made strong efforts to scale back its demands on host cities, which includes encouraging the use of existing or legacy facilities, removing seating requirements for venues and allowing partnerships with other jurisdictions with facilities that could reduce the costs for potential hosts.

“We are going into every single detail to see if we can make them smaller or different,” he said.

“We don’t necessarily need new venues. I think you see with the Paris and L.A. bids, they’re using a lot of existing infrastructure.”

Dubi added the IOC is also committing US$925 million for the chosen 2026 candidate, a number he said could increase as well.

“We’re very proud to be able to contribute financially,” he said.
It's almost like walking into a hurting car dealership and the sales guy keeps throwing in stuff into the package to make the sale cause you're the only guy that's come by in weeks.
