Default Turo - Any experiences, reviews, advice

    Hello Beyond,

I’m hoping to rent an exotic vehicle while I’m down in the states for a few days and Turo is about $400/day cheaper on average than renting through the standard exotic rental companies. I was just wondering if anybody has experience with Turo and if they would recommend it.

    Cheers

I rented a Jeep when I went to LA last year. The process was simple - booked online, bought their insurance and picked up the car in the AM. I returned the car the next day with the gas filled and that was the end of it. It was a rental for 24 hours, and I did not go over the mileage allowance (I think it was about 100 or 150 miles).

For an exotic car, I would guess the mileage allowance would be a lot less.

I've used Turo twice in LA. Both times I used the LAX valet lot and the process was very straight forward. Get off the plane, order an Uber to the Custom Hotel (paid for by Turo), go to the valet lot and grab the car. All correspondence is through the Turo App with the owner. The nice thing about the valet lot is that they take before/after pictures of the car for you so all pre-existing damage is documented and agreed upon by the owner/you before you take off with the car.

My experiences have been great as the cars were well maintained and in good condition. I've heard some horror stories where the car would be a total POS... dirty, worn tires, etc. So just make sure you read all the reviews on the owner and go from there. I didnt buy any insurance from Turo since my car insurance will cover any rental up to 100k in value and the cars I rented were under that. Otherwise, i'd recommend springing for the insurance, especially on an exotic.

Just "turo'd" an F-Type S in Honolulu this coming Feb for 8 days. Yah, it's vastly cheaper than traditional rental companies. Never done this before. Reviews seemed great and all. Only downside is that I had to get at least the basic Turo insurance and put up a deposit as well because I'm under 30. Under 25 couldn't rent them at all. Lot's of Model X's to choose from too. Might try one of those out while I'm there.

Only ever saw 1 F-Type in person before. Excited to drive one.

Just checked out the availability for Maui this Christmas, tons of Tesla’s. Must be a lot of owners who can’t afford them trying to make their payments.

You just described a huge portion of the Hawaii population in a nutshell.

Last time I rented I found turo was more expensive than going through a standard rental but I wasn’t getting an exotic, a lot of them charge a pick up and drop off fee plus they charge you for cleaning and have quite limited mileage

I actually have a vehicle, a 2015 LR2, listed on Turo and 3 rentals in it's been great. We have 3 vehicles in the house and my wife doesn't drive a lot but even worst case scenario we'd only be using two of them simultaneously so we thought we'd give it a shot. No complaints so far but I can keep the thread posted with updates. Let me know if you have any questions about listing your vehicle.

Forgot to update but have used turo a handful of times since posting. Always a great experience and haven’t had any hiccups with my rentals.

It's more convenient to go with traditional car rental shops if you want normal cars.

Turo is only for unique cars that you can't get elsewhere. The process is a lot more of a hassle.

On the flip side, anyone know someone or has put their own vehicle on Turo?

Came across this article, not sure if it's purely a marketing puff piece since it's on their site blog:

More info on the experience? How's the income generated from the vehicle listing?

I imagine getting reimbursed for scratches, door dings, rock chips, etc. is a nightmare. Is that the case?

So there I was, a student renting out my Hyundai Elantra... it got rented so much I needed a second car, so I bought a 70K Porsche Cayman!

    Oh please.... haha

Guy obviously has access to family cash
I have no idea if that's the case. He could be financing it for all we know.

At $204 per day, that's roughly $6000 per month assuming full rental capacity. Payment on a car like that over 3 years @ 2.99% is probably around $2200 a month, no?

I just threw some messy math together but it seems there's alot of potential.

But yeah, jumping from renting out an Elantra to a Cayman seems like a stretch, although it's a much more marketable vehicle but he's also got other cheaper cars like a 328i.

Who in their right mind is paying $200/day to rent an Elantra that any rental agency will give you for $15/day? What am I missing?

Sorry, I meant the Cayman that SP was referring to. He's already got 220 trips reviewed on it.

In Canada, I think you deal with Intact with $1000 deductible as owner.

In US, you can choose one of the the prearranged packages but I remember reading that none will cover interior damages.

That sounds like a nightmare. First person to come along who treats it like a rental car and you're looking at up to $1000 in costs. You'd pretty well just have to resign yourself to the fact that your car will become a piece of junk in a very short period of time, so the rental profit would need to outweigh that.
