Another important factor that is usually missed is accident report data. Including what caused the collision, weather conditions, drunk driving, moving violation(including running a stop sign), jay walking, etc. I get the impression that the drop in speed is less about preventing the collision but reducing the consequences of the collision.

If anything I find the reduction in speed harder to manage as a pedestrian, when trying to cross at an uncontrolled intersection in a 30 zone there is a large variation in speed, so it can become difficult to judge proper gap in traffic. I would say if you get the speed limit closer to what people are actually doing then I think there would be more consistency and it would be safer, if you are an attentive pedestrian.

The entire report and city study is flawed. They bulked all injury and casualty accidents together and just took the location and road type.
What they did not do is assess each one and decide, was it a rear ender accident, jaywalking, inattention, or speed?

Then the map they have has inconsistent bins/groups of data.
1-16 over the course of 6 years and then 64-109 for the high group. Basically, someone said, make a map that shows accidents in residential areas are all over and the city needs a blanketed reduction in speed.
NW hot spot is Crowfoot Center?!

can we have the speed they take off the side streets added to the main roads?

take 10km/h off any road that's 50km/h or slower today
add 10km/h to any road that's 60km/h or faster today

thus restoring balance to the universe.

Anyone else get the following email from the city of Calgary?

Public Hearing for proposed speed limit change

Responding to a notice of Motion from Council, The City of Calgary reviewed options to improve safety on neighbourhood roads by reducing the unposted speed limit. Recommendations were presented to the SPC on Transportation and Transit on September 30, 2020 and the following recommendations were approved:

Changing the unposted speed limit in Calgary from 50 km/h to 40 km/h
To post a 50 km/h speed limit on most Collector roadways.

There will be a public hearing on November 2, 2020 on the proposed bylaw to change the unposted speed limit in Calgary to 40 km/h. If you would like to submit a written submission about the proposed bylaw, please submit your feedback before noon on October 26, 2020 by using this form.

For residents who want to attend and speak to the proposed bylaw, covid-19 protocols will be in place. Please contact [email protected] to register and receive further information on how to call in, or participate in person.

If you’re looking for more information on what roads could see changes to the speed limit the project website has maps of every ward where the changes could be applied. You’ll also find the travel time calculator on the site. For the majority of Calgarians, changes to the speed limit on residential and collector roads will add under two minutes to the daily commute.

Thank you for your continued interest in this project.

I can think of no bigger waste of time than filling out one of those forms, unfortunately. The city has already made their decision as with everything else they 'propose'.

    Wow these guys are incompetent

In a year they'll create another committee to re-validate the findings of the most recent study then spend how many millions doing a plebiscite?

And then still disregard any results from said plebescite, and enforce what the mighty Nenshi hath decree!

Less costly than an Olympic committee I suspect.

Those councillors must feel very secure about their jobs to try that in an election year.

Only roads without signs. Doesn't seem like a huge deal, mind you I don't drive for a long distance on residential roads basically ever.

I wish cops would do any enforcement of the blown stop signs in front of my house.

There are a lot more unsigned roads than you may think, that includes a lot of collector roads even some minor arterial roads well.

All the Airdrie folk please chime in.
How many lives have you saved driving 30km/h?
How many speed traps do you pass daily while they work to put a stop to these malicious savages trying to kill anyone walking?

What a joke, all for an excepted drop of 5kph in the average speed. $6 million in upfront costs and then $2 million extra per year after, half a billion if they install traffic calming

I hated every time I'm driving in Airdrie. Speed traps everywhere, and stuck behind slow cars on wide roads everywhere. So much better now that I've stopped going to those orgies to avoid the roads.

They'll probably "forget" to put up the 50 signs for the collector roads.
