Default City charter, prepare for lower speed limits. Implementing April 2021

    http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgar...rter-1.4609322

Lower residential speed limit now more feasible

Nenshi said city council has been lobbied for years to look at lower residential speed limits. The charter could make it easier if council wants a change.

"Under the current rules, we just couldn't do it without signing every single street and the cost is absolutely prohibitive," he said.

"Under the charter, the regulations give us the flexibility to find solutions that work for Calgarians and we can start doing that right away."
Phase 1 was school zone to playground zone. Phase 2 will be 30km/h unless otherwise posted. Can’t wait.

Last thing we need is to give this city council more powers.

So why did you give this city council more power, assuming using 'we' includes you?

Like it even matters... no one even tries to reach the limit anywhere anymore. It’s like people actually want to sit at red lights

Driving in Victoria/Vancouver right now, and here is your future Calgary, at least in the core:30kph limits, 2 lane roads closed down to one for bike lanes/flower pots/bullshit, entire roads blocked off for picnic tables and flower pots, no available street parking unless you circle the block for 15 minutes. Public transit is no better than it was 30 years ago, except Victoria has free bikes ditched all over randomly, which if you are single and have no friends is semi useful. The end result is I think a lot of people say fuck going anywhere farther then a handful of blocks away in the core.

I'm not sure specifically why the government wants to limit mobility, but I know it's one way of controlling people by limiting their movement.

This has been the #1 thing brought up anytime the charter was in the news. So dumb. Maybe they will bring in the cosswalk flags now too.
Lets just crawl around neighborhoods instead of getting anywhere in a timely manner. The playground zone decision was just the edge of the slippery slope.

And Secondary Suites are a way of eroding traditional family homes to open the door for Marxism. You'll find other similar viewpoints at this guy's website: http://www.larryforcalgary.ca/

You're not complaining about lack of mobility. You're complaining about lack of mobility for cars. What good is promoting a single-form of transport for mobility if you can't afford a car (or don't want to own a car)? You want to limit people's freedom in choice of transportation, that's what controlling people is.

Well, they haven't, but we have more extensive media and social media coverage of any incident and we have a relatively new "you can't put a price on a human life" idea.

Of course that's stupid, you absolutely can and should put a price on human life, in terms of money or in terms of societal benefits. That's literally the entire point government budgets and many engineering designs.

You are right, so to make sure we don’t do any limiting let’s remove all the HOV lanes that only allow certain types of vehicles to use them.

Also let’s make sure we rip up all those divided bike lanes and turn them back into multi use lanes that everyone can use regardless of their preference in transportation.

We wouldn’t want to “control” anyone by encouraging any specific transportation choices now would we?

Well, I mean, I am pretty sure somebody could write a thesis based on this, I have a hard time disagreeing with the fundamental claim being made.

Government, in general, wants to exert as much control over you as possible. Having a bunch of passive, lonesome people with no sense of community (with the smallest form of community being family) and therefore must utilize government to feel as a part of something (identity politics) ABSOLUTELY falls into utopian (well, all utopias are distopian, but I digress) liberal ideals of everyone being the same and part of a bigger whole while having no real allowed differences except what the government says you have.

It also takes more away from people (affordable, decent sized housing) while juuuust giving them enough (a roof over their head that keeps them sort of comfortable) that they can still focus on going to their jobs and not rioting.

So yea, you made a very good point about how accurate that is.

What studies show a, per capita, increase in pedestrian/vehicle collisions in Calgary to justify such stupidity ?

The same study that showed an increase in school/playground zone pedestrian collisions to justify the idiocy there?

Don't need a study, they talk about it for ten minutes, say oh think of the children, vote and it is done.

I’m all for multi-use roads. Nothing slows down and discourages vehicle traffic more.
