The law is something like minimum 3 years. There is nothing about it being a "break". It then goes up due to extenuating circumstances. So there is no "reduced sentence" there is a minimum, and then everything after. I haven't argued for a break. Within the laws given, 5-6 years would seem appropriate. Those advocating for more need to justify their reasoning, I've justified mine.

I think this is reasonable. Long enough for punishment, not too long as to completely ruin the guy being a functional member of society.

Since no one else has ever had a sentence higher than 6 years, I'm not a fan because this guy has jumped on his sword and thrown himself at the mercy of the court 111% since the start.
It's shitty to see someone break the punishment record when he did the rightest thing he could and took full accountability.
This tragedy has no winners no matter what happened though. It still makes me start to cry if I think about it too much.

Yeah that's what I thought too. He already owned up to it and he doesn't get to stay anyway. 4 yr and trip of shame back to India is probably enough punishment, away from his wife and kids.

But I do think this sentence is used to send a message to the trucking industry as well.
