I apologize for the essay from my phone, that truly became a mess, but what priority do you think "I'm standing in front of my stolen car with the guy who stole it inside of it trying to figure out how to start it and get away" warrants? A 4 hour wait? Higher or lower priority than shuffling paperwork, or giving a guy a ticket for tint? The large part of the problem is that the priority for catching thieves is so low that even when it's handed to cops on a silver platter they don't care.

When they ask for front plates saying that is to help catch car thieves I laugh as that is a complete joke and won't do anything except cost the province more money and us more money. I've been dealing with theft recoveries for a decade and I can count on my hand the amount of times a thief was caught with the stolen vehicle. The majority of thefts are found a month later abandoned after neighbors called it in as a abandoned car.
Perhaps not a 4 hour wait, but if you are going to assume that you had to wait only because cops were out giving tinting tickets and had nothing else to deal with, this discussion is pointless. I understand how you would feel when you are wronged and violated, but don't assume that there aren't any other emergencies taking place that could possibly be life or death situations. It's unfortunate that the cops can't always be everywhere at once. If you understood the call loads and how short staffed some districts are perhaps you would change your view a little.

As for theft recoveries, just because you don't hear about it online or in the news doesn't mean its not happening. I have recovered countless stolen vehicles, sometimes several in one shift. And most of them were recovered by checking out areas like parking lots, parkades, back alleys, areas around the river.

And for the record, I am completely against the front license plates.

How about they just RFID the current plates. Give them a unique ID, common open hardware, police can lookup the actual license info from that id - rural homeowners can log coming/going, police can read them from a distance and watch for stolens easier.

Fuck the front plate - let's get on with the digital plate.

There is no assumption. At any point in time in this province, somewhere an RCMP officer is giving somebody a god damn speeding ticket versus doing something useful.

We all should be OUTRAGED at this fact, that our tax dollars pay police to give us meaningless revenue generating tickets while criminals are commiting property crimes and WORSE.

So when you say they are fucking short staffed, that's not a funding issue. That's a direct bullshit policy issue that is caused by the kind of people we vote in at all levels of government.

I got through two years of not mounting my front plate when I was in Vancouver, I don't want to go through the hassle here. How does a front plate stop crime? <-Thats a serious question. I wasn't around when we had front plates years ago, and I honestly don't understand how having a plate at the front of the car changes crime rates. Is it because then people won't steal just the back plate to mount on other vehicles? They will just take both. It won't make my car harder to steal, that won't change. Criminals using a vehicle for criminal things should be smart enough to cover the plate anywhere there may be cameras, and then uncover when driving normally. Such a stupid idea, that would make use have to pay for another piece of metal on the car.

Front plates are very convenient for Big Brother.

How many million cars are there in AB? Can you imagine the cost to re issue that many plates.

And we thought it was cost prohibitive to put up 30kph signs in residential areas.

Lol. Ok. Come out with me one night and I’ll show you how it really works, and you’ll see why it’s an assumption. Your understanding of what’s really happening out there, and what the police are doing and why we’re doing it could use a reality check and it may help you better understand the realities of law enforcement.

So come on down here, and I’ll take you out one night. I’d be happy to show you around.

Edit: If anyone else is interested please PM me and we can talk about it. I think it’s important for people to know what’s happening out there and what we are really doing, as it’s good for the community to know what your police are doing for you, so I’m happy to discuss it with those who show interest.

    I specifically said RCMP.

I drive H2 everyday. There are multiple RCMP pulling people over the whole day, everyday. Them, plus the sherriffs which are dedicated to solely traffic violations, prove my point fine.

I never said police don't do their job. I said they are misused, and its unacceptable that we the public allow it.

The officers I know have said traffic is a very small portion of their time (contrary to popular belief). You have to have some presence on the streets, can’t just let it be a free for all.

Oh, I see. She talks about the police, and you use the RCMP as a specific example for a rebuttal? That doesn’t really make sense to me, especially if you had an actual understanding of what the RCMP are also tasked with and the challenges they face when it comes to their responsibilities, including the huge undertaking of traffic enforcement. I’d be happy to talk with you about it sometime.

maybe there has been too many crimes that occurred when the suspects put their vehicle in reverse and got away that way all the way home.

Town council scrapped the idea thank god. I wrote an email directly to the mayor about it a couple weeks ago telling him it was basically idiotic to even propose.

They all still lost my vote next election tho.
