+1 I used an old jump rope and had a knot on the filter that was tight as I pulled the correct direction. Worked well on my Mazda when the filter was stuck on.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

This was my first thought as well. If you can get closer to the base of the filter, there's more structure there to stop it from collapsing. When I was changing oil for a living and we had a difficult filter, this trick usually worked. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

^ There is actually engine structure on the other side of the filter which prevents the strap from be placed closer towards the front of the filter... I'd have to start unbolting shit.
BUT...
I am pleased to announce that I have persevered with this endeavor this morning. Filter is off, new one is on. A little ingenuity and a small pair of vice grips goes a long way sometimes.

So for future reference in case anyone else has the same problem, what did you do?This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
^ I took my large flathead screwdriver and punched in a new hole into the side of filter more towards the front of it. I widened out the hole a little bit and then hooked the top jaw of my small vice grips inside of the filter, while the bottom jaw clamped on the outside (clamped onto the filter housing). The vice grips were clamped on perpendicular to the filter and if you were to look dead on from the back of the filter, the vice grips would be at the 8 o'clock position. This allowed me to push the vice grips forward with greater leverage which would turn the filter counter clockwise. It still took some serious force but it held together and rotated.

i just went through this same shit on my dads truck this weekend, big durty dodge diesel, luckily it was accessible from the top, but there was lines blocking the bottom so i couldn't get a filter wrench on, i ended up using a ratchet strap, it worked perfect, just put it on so the tightening is the same way you need to turn the filter and it just cranks down until the filter gives, didnt slip at all...
not my pic, but the same method.

This has never failed me. I wrap some very coarse sandpaper around the filter first sometimes for non slip action.
This. I had a filter on one of my farm trucks that was an absolute diaster to get off. I used this and a pin punch to get it off. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
