Interesting but because as usual you didn’t read the article I’ll correct your thread title:

California energy commission to vote next week on whether all new builds over 3 stories tall will require solar installations

Joe Rogan has mentioned on his podcast that currently the state requires a portion of the roofs of all new builds to be “solar ready” the number I found was 15% of the roofs surface area right now has to be solar ready. I wonder if they’d stick to 15% and have all new builds actually install the solar at the time of the build or if they’ll change that number.

That being said again they haven’t even voted on it yet

    Edit:

Hmm, so independent says “homes over 3 stories” Fox News says “up to 3 stories”

The main takeaway is that they will be pushing hard, but not to the point of net-zero (because there are plenty of places where there simply is not enough sunlit roof area)

Even if its a token couple panels, it is still going to add significant cost.

    That would be awesome.

Really a no brainer, new construction is the perfect time because it gets baked into the mortgage, it will be normal, like AC. I would do it to all rooftops though.

I wondered why every municiplaity hasn't already done this already.

Cost is substantial, they estimate roughly $30,000 USD/household on average. ~5-10% on top of the standard purchase price is not something people would take lightly.

California isn't the real world... it is what happens when too many hipsters and movie stars congregate together and take over government

The only real thing this might contribute is to push the price of homes out of the gasp of a large number of buyers. The good thing is the weather is moderate, so those who end up pushed out totally from the market at the bottom can at least live in tents on the beach.
    Agreed 100%

Of course they would. the extra bit on your mortgage paymnet would be offset by your power bill being way less. It would be damn near a wash.

Its California, average home price is $440k. $30k is peanuts for net zero.

Yeah except now you are forcing the guys who used to be able to afford those homes to buy homes worth 30K less, and therefore force out those buyers of those cheaper homes to even lower value homes, and eventually at the very bottom you create a housing crisis

30K isn't a small amount of money if you don't work in O&G or in Silicon Valley; trying to trivialize it is pretty insensitive

The last thing California (or really anywhere in the world) needs is even more expensive housing; they should be trying to tackle the housing crisis instead of farting around with making it hard with useless mandatory eco programs.

Just backs my theory that the government should stay the hell out of peoples private lives

The amazing thing about the Bay Area, is all the normal working people there HATE Apple, Google, Tesla, Facebook, All of the Silicon Valley giants, for coming in and making living completely unaffordable. People forced out of their neighbourhoods they have lived in for generations to make room for Stanford engineering grads who work for the tech giants gestalt idolizes.

Normal everyday folks like Gestalt getting priced out of their lives. Very ironic.

gentrification. it happens everywhere, even old inner neihborhoods in Calgary. The house my parents bought and built for $90k 25 years ago recently sold for just shy of a million with a little reno.

We were looking at a gorgeous place in long beach last year. very affordable. better then calgary. you can get some nice condos in san diego ocean views, under a million. I mean, it's no calgary, butwe could make do

Who needs photoshop when you can look at a Live webcam. Looks like a great day to me, no smog at all!

Seriously, most photos like that are bull shit, or they are one day out of one thousand. Photos are the propaganda tool of the eco-movement. I feel bad that people can't think for themselves.

Here is a picture of the same thing, only it is nothing but blue skies... guess if I was using eco-logic, that means it never rains!

Solar is the real reason I buy Tesla monthly. Love the cars, but recognize Musk was juat trying to prove a point and embarass gas guzzlers performance wise. He's compleyely decimated the golf cart image of EVs and drove the major manufacturers to pursue ev. Not sure he's to interested in going further.

As a side when i was researching our solar system, found books with pictures roof top solar water heaters from the 1800s. during ww2, there were African countries with solar electric generation. Reflected sun at tubes carying water steam turbines made the power.

The evil oil industry hijacked our future through war and buying politicians.
