    Default Oculus GO

    https://www.oculus.com/go/

    https://www.androidcentral.com/oculus-go

Entry level complete standalone device, does not attach to a computer or console. 3DOF.

    $269 CAD or $329 CAD

Snapdragon 821 with 32 or 64GB not-upgradeable storage. Other VR players are soon to directly compete with this device. Personally, I'd think they just need to standardize on a dual screen wireless HDMI protocol and let a 300 watt computer do all the processing - but hey - why listen to me?

I don't believe you need an app. As long as it has "VR" as a descriptor, you will at the very least get stereoscopic.

I can imagine they may have problems with moisture buildup, lol - might be worth it to invest in some reusable (microwaveable) silica gel packets.

Ahhh, jumped on this one. There is currently no backorder time on this at all, expected to ship within 3 days. They can produce these things pretty easily, its pretty much a specialized Cellphone with focusing lenses.

Pro tip = Get a bottle of mouthwash and wipe down your face every so often to keep the nasties in check.

Other things: Only one controller, so no pulling strings on bows... Then again, there are some people who only want one controller *cough*.

What they really need on this thing is a camera in the front and a quickbutton that you can press on the headset or controller to "see through the camera" where it fades you back into reality instead of having to remove the device.

Actually, I'm not even entirely sure I can use the cheap ones. My IPD is 73 mm.

I'm not totally convinced that an 835 has enough horsepower to convincingly do 6dof, so might as well go for the "smoother" 3dof if not using for gaming most of the time. It might solely end up as a media consumption device (no games)

Jumping and ducking and moving around = not gonna happen with me. My ass will be glued to a chair if not completely prone.

Some game developer really needs to make just one killer VR app. Otherwise I can see these types of units being useful for those on long airplane trips or backseat passengers. Realistically, a lot of time is spent in a seat and 6dof is wasted (airplane, car, too lazy to get my ass out of a chair) Kinect held my interest for a solid 15 minutes.

Until there is an absolute must play VR game, I'm content with big screen PC master race gaming.

Big screen 3D porn (which is all 3dof) for a couple hundred bucks? Bring it.

Waiting on: Netflix gets around to downloading and saving. AND waiting on: Chair with ultra long lasting ball bearings for swiveling around, and quick change from coasters to anchored point on the floor

Have VR headsets improved much since the Rift of ~2-3 years ago? Pixels in the viewfinder were easily visible and they had a distracting "screen door" effect when I tried one out in Japan.

Was that consumer version or one of the DKs? DK1 is horrible. DK2 is way better. Consumer version improved very little over DK2.

Consumer version is ok and Rift Go has higher ppi but everything is rendered by SD821, so there is a limit on how good detail the rendering would be.

Rift Go is basically a gateway to get more users so more development resources will show up for VR. It's primary go is probably VR movies and social media.

Given failure of gaming VR going mainstream, they need something to keep the devs working. For the hardcore crowd, they still need a wireless/sensorless set up in order for it to gain momentum.

I am not sure to be honest, it was at a Toyota event and I didn't catch the exact model number. It was quite large and running from a PC tower, but I doubt that helps much haha.

What is the resolution per eye? I have tried the DJI googles which were 1080P for each eye and they weren't great, but maybe not a great comparison. Camera EVFs are also quite bad, and those are getting up there resolution-wise, so I am guessing the VR headsets would need some pretty crazy resolution to look life-like (and some serious hardware powering them).

tech isn't there yet, Rift isn't that far from DJI googles at 1080x1200 per eye. But the display can do 90hz. So actually Rift is rending at 2400x1080 at 90Hz, that's why some VR titles are GPU hungry.

Oculus Go is at 1280x1440 per eye but only default at 60Hz, max out at 72Hz. That quite a feat to feature such panel on a $200 device. I won't be surprised it's the same 120Hz screen on the Razer phone.

Say somewhere down the road they fit a 4K 90hz panel into the headset, the rendering power you need to fully realize that would be select few that can afford top shelve GPUs. But in the interim, I would expect the next Rift to have the same screen as the Go and hopefully become wireless. The PC tether is quite annoying.

Personally I have no idea how they got it to a $200 price point. The snapdragon 821 isn't *that* old or cheap, the screen isn't all that old or cheap either, the optics are obviously the latest and greatest (arguably the cheapest thing to manufacture, once you've figured out how to actually improve it, and we are definitely still in the stages of improving optics)

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...on_820_and_821

The main thing to keep in mind is that its a six watt device, and in absolutely no way shape or form can compete with a PC or even console for games. If you go into it with the intention of not playing any games on it and see it more as a replacement or augmentation for a portable set of headphones for long trips or rainy camping weekends - I believe that is what they are trying to go for.

Since it is 3dof, a more accurate descriptor of this product would probably be "Oculus sit" or "Oculus sit down and swivel while resting your arm on the armrest" - But GO works too

2018 version of the Sony Walkman? Its got a very slow start, but it does have all the necessary components other than *probably should not be used on public transit*

BTW: Does anyone know if there is a good 3D VR "candy crush" type game out there?

Interesting - thanks. Yeah you need a wicked PC to run the thing, but if it's not wireless, that severely limits what you can do as well. In it's current state anyway, it's not hard to see why VR never really took off.

Also the DJI goggles made me sick haha - I couldn't imagine doing FPV racing.

If using for pr0n, I can see one gigantically huge benefit that no one has really touched on:

If you have a current girlfriend or significant other, and you don't want to miss out on your viewing habits - this does provide privacy. You can 0% get away with watching on a TV or laptop and not be completely obvious.

Or at least it provides privacy right up until the second that said SO sneaks up behind you and pulls it off your head to see what you are watching.

Wouldn’t they realize you were watching porn since they can see your dick in your hand.
