    Default Amazon Fire 7

    https://www.amazon.ca/Fire-Tablet-Di.../dp/B071X562MF

Seems that Amazon is pushing it hard. Seen it before for $50, today $45 with free shipping.

I think people are getting it as a throwaway device, one that if they are caught out in the rain with or accidentally drop - it won't really hurt.
    Cocoa $11,000 per tonne.

Check the Linus Tech Tips on the thing. I wouldn't buy one.

Probably better than the shitty tablets my kids are currently using. Good price. I will investigate.

I'll give it a shot. It seems like a possible secondary Pokémon Go burner that needs to be slaved off a real tablet - which isn't a problem for me.

I mean, its $45 Canadian pesos - crazy price. Next thing you know they will be giving them away with happy meals.

Only works through wifi though as it does not have cellular capability in itself. That it does not have a cellular connection at all is probably a gigantic plus for kids - because you can't incur extra charge through a cellular network - if you don't have the chip.

8gb isnt enough if you're using it for anything more than a single use extra unit.

It definitely will not be enough for the kids to play with, i have a 32gb fire 8 HD and i only loaded on the play store and google chrome on top of the native apps and its at 23.62gb free of 26.57gb, so divide the total space by 4 and you're looking at 6.64gb total space, minus the used space on mine which is (26.57-23.62) around 3gb, you have around 3.5gb of free space... not a lot these days, some games take a few hundred MB each

IMO anything with less than 16gb is not sufficient for any sort of regular use.

It does have the expansion slot, which is probably why the 8GB is so popular.

Even on my full tablet, I move as much as I can onto the micro SDcard because its faster than the onboard for some crazy reason.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kindle_Fire

Being only 1GB memory is probably getting my hopes up though. Still - Spotify without tying down another device is always useful, Bluetooth 4.1 is perfectly acceptable for high quality audio.

Totally retarded that they labelled the generations 1,2,5 and 7 though.

yeah 1gb ram is definitely a stretch... i think they called it 7 because of the screen size, because 8 and 10, are relative tot he screen size... 1 and 2 make sense... not sure where 5 came from?..

EDIT: i guess this kind of makes sense..

If you guys want a cheap tablet for your kids you're better off with a Lenovo Tab 4 IMO. Still very cheap ($200) and designed with kids in mind. They also make a higher end version which is really good value:

Purely for price though the Fire's will always be cheapest. For those worried about space, you can quadrouple it's storage for $12. The Fire's are pretty terrible though, you just can't really complain for the price.

Some days I do regret selling off my Nexus 2013 tablet. They cost more now and spec barely changed in 5 years.

Any Nexus 7 today would probably need a battery replacement, but that tablet was so smooth it would be a great entry level tablet even today.

Unfortunately every Android manufacturer has stopped making high end tablets, which is disappointing, but there are some good value ones out there if you just want a cheap tablet - especially the smaller ones. The cheapest iPad Mini still costs $530 with 4-year old hardware inside.

I use these tablets as my smart home control panels because they were so cheap. The mount + power cost almost as much

I find they can be a bit sluggish sometimes but for $50, can't really complain.

My wife and I still have our Nexus 7's (2013) model and they are still working great and battery life is still more than acceptable, probably the best piece of electronics that I've had that have lasted over the years.

I am posting this from a Fire 8 HD, I've been impressed with it given the price

Best part is it becomes an Echo when plugged in... So on the weekend when I am debating sleeping in more I can yell out "Alexa.... What time is it". So much easier than trying to read a clock, haha.

I've mostly been using it for video calling while I am away, a little video streaming for shows on Netflix or Amazon Prime.
wait how are you using Alexa on it? I thought it wasn't available for Canadians yet. i even opened a ticket with amazon support about a month ago about it and they told me the same thing that it wasn't supported in Canada yet.

Is it all gone? I don't see the $50 price on Amazon.ca. Need to replace my son's iPad and I'm not going to spend $500+ for another tablet.
I have the Fire HD 8 for watching Netflix and Kodi and seems to work well for a portable device when traveling. Can't beat that price point.
I don't like the Fire OS either, but a simple hack can get you Google Play store where you can download a lot of Android apps.

Google fire hd launcher hijack and install nova launcher. Don't forget the google play store. It takes less than 5 mins to install the two mods.

$50 again. I can imagine next incremental gen will be out soon.
