Default Rebuilding a floor jack, where to get parts?

i have a 1.5 ton mastercraft aluminum floor jack, i have had it for years now and its been great, was using it the other day to service my travel trailer bearings/tires and it pissed oil everywhere... probably using it slightly above its capabilities...

anyway, i think its just the seals, anybody know where to get parts for a hydraulic jack? i looked t up and its sold under a bunch of different names but its impossible to tell by the pics if the parts are correct so i'd rather go somewhere local... unfortunately its not just o-rings, there are some sort of other parts in with the seals.

    https://images11.palcdn.com/hlr-syst...987_manual.pdf
that looks like the same jack, in powerfist brand... if that's the same i need parts A18 (i think its a crush ring so it can only be used once) and A21 and A22 (which is the odd part "back seal" looks like a plastic washer)

i prefer the aluminum ones because they are very light, like 25-35 lbs, and i haul mine around a lot, take it every time we go camping or on a road trip, so portability is important... i think the seals should only be like $20, and i am not working right now so $100 is a lot of money atm.

Almost any industrial hardware supplier has seals and the like. You probably just blew an o-ring if you overpressured it.

End of the day, it might require some hunting, but most parts should be easy to find. O-rings from wherever, someplace like BC Bearing can get a smorgasbord of crush washers and other seals if needed. You really need to take it apart and see what is in there before anyone can even make recommendations besides generic ones.

Check out HyPower here in Calgary they are a hydraulic shop, however they might tell you to buy a new jack.

i have it apart, the orings seem fine, but in the diagram it shows there are 2 o-ings and 2 "back seal" which is a thin plastic ring so i dont know who will really have that piece, and it looks liek thats the damaged pice because the one that is in there is cracked, although there were only 1 of each in there

Thin plastic ring? Make one yourself.

You are being cost conscious right? You'll spend $15-$20 in fuel and probably walk away empty handed driving around. If its hard plastic, get creative with what you can make it out of. Rubber, probably some sort hardware store.

It could have been as simple as an oring temporarily popped out of its groove as well. Hell, that plastic ring, if it is only "cracked", fix it with some sort of silicone or even plastic weld it.

Jacks aren't too crazy, they'll deal with a lot of crap.

Yeah i already rebuilt it once and it ended up with the same result so something definitely needs attention... seals typically dont put up with imperfect tolerances... and high pressure hydraulics that hold a several thousand pound item off my head, isn't somewhere i want to cheap out. i dont mind spending a few bucks to fix it right... beats dropping $200+ on a new one

I hope to god that you're not relying on a seal to hold the car above your head, and that you have a jack stand holding up the car.

Dude, thats not perfection .... I know people personally who had to be rescued underneath their vehicle because of a single jack that slipped or came down slowly

I’m gonna lecture too...my sister’s father-in-law was killed in his driveway when the car he was working under collapsed. Pretty traumatic when his wife came out to get him for dinner. I used to work under cars unsupported but no more...even just for short jobs.

I'll support it using jackstands even if im not getting under it, only exception is wheel changes

i was gonna ask if all these people keep a jack stand in their car for roadside wheel changes, my bet is no... but i was trying to let this die, that wasn't the point of the thread.... if i am climbing under the car of course i'll use stands, if i am just reaching under or doing tires where there's minimal possibility of injury, i don't bother.... that said i always triple check my jack placement to ensure good contact and no possibility of slipping, as well as ensuring the car cant roll.

You right... But you know what I do? I stick the tire under the cars frame so that if the car does so happen to fall it lands on the tire/rim and will help save me. Being that I had a car slip off a jack this is something I do automatically now in case.

OEM jacks are generally screw-type with a fixed bottom. Far less chance of slippage compared to a hydraulic jack on wheels. That said, I don't always use jack stands if I'm not getting underneath the car either.

its funny you say that because the only time i have had a jack slip was when i was using a bottle jack, which should be a straight lift as well...

those factory jacks are flimsy junk, if the car rolls even a little bit they'll just collapse... i dont even bother with them, i always carry my floor jack when i go out of the city.
