Outta curiosity, what size capacity (cu ft) or grains of resin did you guys go with? And how many in the household?
I did the the Whirlpool 30,000 grain for a the two of us. It says it is good up to 4 people though. $550 at Canadian tire right now.

Bump! Had someone in for a quote on a water softener, but since my basement is developed it is going to be a lot of work to install the loop/bypasses for the kitchen and outside hose faucets, not to mention having to patch the drywall after

Another option he suggested was a Nuvo:

It wouldn’t be as “good” as a softener but apparently helps with calcium buildup on faucets/glass shower doors. Has anyone used one? Does it also help with making soap lather better/clothes cleaner?

My house is now approaching 6 years of age. How do I know if my water softner works. I feel like it isn't working properly and I feel like its hardly using as much salt as it did before. Suggestions?

Probably a bad valve head. Mine had a little filter that was completely clogged up, and cleaning it extended the life by a couple of years, but the resin bed is used up now and I'll be getting a new unit soon.

Bumping this in case the info can help anyone else.

Called TheWaterman thanks to this thread - he did recommend Autotrol 268/762 High Flow 1.0 cu ft over a Fleck system but from my research it sounds like both are well regarded. Warranty (even includes labor) and ease of servicing is better on the Autotrol and he likes the valve better. $1095 installed for the recommended unit, seemed quite reasonable. Derek was knowledgeable and didn't try to sell me anything I didn't need.
