    Default Suspension Replacement on a '97 Civic

    Hi guys,

    The fluid has leaked out of my rear shocks and my front suspension is starting to get bumpy (though not making any noises) on my '97 Civic.

    Any idea how much I'd have to pay a shop to replace all 4 shocks, or just the front 2? I assume it's just the shocks and not other components because there is no rattling, etc. but really I have no idea.

    No idea how old they are either as I bought the car used. Just trying to get a ballpark price.

    Buy some coilovers - it'll be cheaper than new struts all around

    I'm not too clear on the difference - I think looking under the car there are coils on the shocks, does that mean I already have coilovers or is that something specific?

    I'd be likely be going with whatever the cheapest replacement option is so if that means replacing whatever I have with coilovers I'd be up for that. Any idea on parts/installation cost?

    You can buy shock/spring/mount assemblies that are all ready to go with no need to swap springs and mounts over to the new shocks. RockAuto sells them. Makes it a lot easier to DIY.

    Not sure how much a shop would charge for parts and labour.

    On a 20 year old vehicle, you're looking at bushing as well typically. Rough guess, its going to be starting, around 1000$ for all the parts and labour. If you are planning on keeping the vehicle, its usually a good idea.

    Oof, that's pricey, but I knew it would be up there for all 4.

    I'd love to say I'm keeping the car but there is some not insignificant rust on the quarter panels around the wheel wells. Not sure what can really be done about it - will have to look into that before dropping that kind of cash.

    I mean even cheaping out, Canadian tire special (dont do this) $100 per corner for struts, 1 hour labour (at least per corner) ... its 800 before taxes. 1000$ is easy if anything goes wrong.

    I drive a 15 year old civic (hatch), but I plan on keeping it as long as possible as it fits me so well, so I dropped around 800$ in after market suspension (parts) a few years ago.

    You don't fix civics you drive them till there is no body left.

    Front suspension isn't usually bad but the rears get fucked badly with seized bolts and bushings.

    Cheaper to scrap and buy another.

    Its sad that the manufacturers got away from selling 3 door vehicles here in stupid SUV-land. The rest of the world has far, far better choices. I would get a Fiesta/Focus 3 door hatch tomorrow if I could.

    The EP3 was a very good vehicle (fits me and what I do perfectly) and thus, I plan on keeping it for a very long time. If the engine goes (unlikely) it would get upgraded to a K20A2 ,,,, and the transmission to an RSX edition.

    I'm just playing dude...my Civic is like 22 years old man...its staggering what I have spent on my little hatch....
