Default Hammer + Sickel Vodka pulled from Alberta shelves

Dunno how I feel about this, leaning towards it being pretty bullshitty. Not that I am an expert, but the hammer and sickle in no way is anywhere near the association of the swastika with the nazis, to draw comparisons is downright silly. You walk down the street with a hammer and sickle on your shirt, no big deal. A swastika? Good luck with that.

    Stolen from Wikipedia:

The hammer and sickle (☭) or sickle and hammer (Russian: серп и мо́лот, translit. syerp i molot) is a communist symbol that was adopted during the Russian Revolution. At the time of creation, the hammer stood for industrial laborers and the sickle for the peasantry—combined they stood for the worker-peasant alliance for socialism.

After World War I (from which Russia withdrew in the year 1917) and the Russian Civil War, the hammer and sickle became more widely used as a symbol for peaceful labor within the Soviet Union and for international proletarian unity. It was taken up by many communist movements around the world, some with local variations. Today, even after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the hammer and sickle remains commonplace in Russia and other former union republics, but its display is prohibited in some other former Communist countries as well as in countries where Communism is banned by law.
You basically don't see the swastika anywhere anymore except for skinheads.

This is pretty weird. I don’t even see anything wrong with a swastika on a product. If it offends you then don’t buy it, end of story...

So you're ok with having people walk down the street with swastikas printed on their shirt? You'd be the minority.

As a visible minority....(and I am in NO way taking away from the atrocities from the Holocaust)....but people can wear whatever they choose to wear. This is the beauty of the country we live in. Obviously it would be in poor taste to rock a Swastika on one's ensemble, but freedom of expression is just that a freedom. Wearing on on your clothes or having one inked on your body in a visible area that's your choice. But acting on it, or causing a ruckus because of it...the intent plays a huge role in it for me.

Maybe also because culturally the Swastika (although reversed) was a large part of social ceremonies for me as a youth....(I guess I should add from the Hindu/Indian Religion/Culture)

I rarely, if ever agree with J-Hop, but I agree with him. My being offended by something does not mean a person can't have it. Being tolerant of something is different than being ok with it.

Is it distasteful? Yes. But the swastika on an angle was essentially a nazi invention. Reading up on its history, the normal swastika has been around since at least 2,000BC.

Also funny in that a symbol for socialism has been eliminated by the provincial socialist government.

Don’t put words in my mouth please. Believing the government has no place legislating ideas and being ‘ok’ with an idea are two completely different things.

You literally said you have no problem with someone buying a product with a swastika on it.

    Edit.
You know you're wrong if Hitempguy agreed with you.

Again there is a very important distinction. My first post was worded very poorly. I do not have an issue with allowing products to be sold with a swastika. There is nothing wrong with allowing that. Would I buy it? Absolutely not. Just because I agree with allowing it doesn’t mean I’m not morally repulsed by it

A great example of this getting out of control is arresting people for burning a (US) flag (now deemed a constitutional free speech right).

I kind of figured that went without saying, I was going to edit my post as well, but if someone needs that to be explained, they aren't really interested in having an honest conversation.

I somehow don't believe any Ukrainian in Canada was ever offended by a bottle of Russian vodka

I bet it was some stupid left wing nut saw it and lost their mind
I’m a vodka-drinking Ukrainian and I’m not offended in the least. Probably some Maude Flanders who didn’t agree with it.

Sounds like Ukrainians have a pretty good reason to hate communists or be offended by their propaganda.

Ukrainian heritage myself and I couldn't give two fucks if someone wants to use a hammer and sickle symbol on anything. For that matter swastikas too. You should have every right to wear what you want to wear or label your business however you want. Honestly, I would rather all the idiot's advertise to the world what they represent. Makes it a whole lot easier identifying who is an asshole wouldn't you say? Better that than a whole lot of angry racists and d-bags hiding in the closet.
