Default Man charged after seizure of $1 million worth of fake transit passes

I see Upasses pop up all the time on the marketplace here, I wonder if any were these fake ones.

A man has been arrested a year after an investigation began when transit officers noticed an increasing number of high quality, but forged, U-Pass stickers — which are used by post-secondary students.
In January, more than 3,000 passes, professionally printed in China, were intercepted at the Canadian border.
The fake passes could have resulted in a loss of more than $1 million in revenue to Calgary Transit.
31-year-old David Philip Smerd was arrested last week and charged with fraud.
Police allege that over the past three years, Smerd exchanged fraudulent U-Pass stickers with Calgarians for a total of about $34,000.

1 Mil lost in potential Calgary Transit revenue checks out
    120 days (4 months per semester) * 3000 passes * $3.3 for fare = $1.188 Million

I actually questioned it too. What he could of net would have been $3000 x $200 = $600k, but if you factor "Revenue" for if these people bought bus passes its 3000 X 4 Months X $100/Month = $1.2 Million?

    I dunno haha

The ticket books are even easier to counterfeit. I remember making one single ticket with a scanner, an inkjet printer, and glue (printer wouldn't do 2 sided). Looked and felt almost identical, never had the balls to try using it though.

Gee, that $1M in lost revenue could have been put towards trying to implement a scan card system (again).

But isn't the sticker good for a whole semester?

    $140 * 3000 = $420K.

Some of the people found with a counterfeit pass were not students and thus weren't eligible to have one, said Whitelaw. They were given tickets for fare evasion.
Are people without valid Student ID just flash their fake U-Pass when asked?

That was my question whenever i saw the passes for sale on here..if it's not attached to a school ID, how far is it going to get you in front of a transit cop, who's entire goal is to catch people evading buying tickets

I think these are for adults trying to use fake student pass. Why would student buy fake student pass? So you would have to use the price for adult monthly pass. But to generate the biggest number you would use the price for tickets.

The people buying the upasses would be putting them on their old student IDs that they kept after graduating.

i'm sure they have, but they don't force people to get a new one when they change them and they don't expire. I know when i was there from 2005-2011, i had my original ID from 2006 right up until 2010 even though they updated the design i think in 2008 or so.

Not to mention the fact that bus drivers can't be bothered to keep up to date with all 3 school's ID designs (including previous designs since agian they don't expire).

Yea, and if you start with a bus, you dump the ticket into a box where you can't really look at it close enough to determine it's a fake, and you get a transfer which then becomes 100% legit haha.

Back in the day, we had kids steal bus transfers to sell to us for a quarter each, and we used those for free rides.

    Get on bus with transfer.
10 stops later go back to the front and say you forgot to ask for a transfer when you got on with your ticket

Bus transfers are probably the easiest to counterfeit. It's basically printed on toilet paper.

It probably cost very little to print these things so he likely ordered way more than demand and for many years just to make sure he never runs out. 3000 is probably misleading compared to what he has actually sold. U-pass stickers are sold for about $80 to 100 bucks each. At that price and $34K revenue he would've only sold around 400 U-passes total in the last 3 years. I don't know how they came up with the $34K but it should be fairly accurate if they checked his email and texts to see the number of transactions for a given period or cash deposits.
