    Default Insulation in Attic

    Guys,
For everyone who's added blown insulation into their attic. Does it make a material difference in your heat bills in the winter?
    I'm a little skeptical.

Home is 1950's. Has woodchips immediately under the poly and then 4-5" of older blown insulation in there.
Looking to add more but unsure. Home is 2x4 studs and exterior walls feel like they lose more heat than the ceiling. IMO.

    Opinions?

Air leakage is probably the easiest and most effective thing to tackle first. Attic insulation is really easy as well. Once those two are done the costs go up a lot of you tackle window replacements, exterior wall insulation etc.

For a few hundred bucks, attic insulation isn't a bad value.

You realize you are talking to the guy who made his own furniture out of salad bowls right?

I have a similar house with woodchips and had 2-3" of old blown in. They put another 8" in there and it definitely made a difference for us. Money wise I couldn't say exactly because the first winter after was pretty mild, but you could feel it this past winter. Much more comfortable.

Yeah step one is removing the mail pass through in the wall.
Thanks, I'll start seriously getting some quotes for the blown insulation. If it's too costly, I'll do myself regardless of the Gov't rebate.

You barely have any attic insulation so yes, it will make a material difference.

If your basement is not developed, redo the joist headers. You can sometimes pack them to R-60 and it will make a huge difference.
