Default Where would you take your classic car to get painted?

Howdy.. I've been holding off on painting my old classic truck that's been sitting in primer for a couple years and now looking to get final bodywork and paint done. (all sheet metal work complete). Where (or who) would you take you're classic ride to for paint that doesn't involve extortion.. I got scared off with a $40K quote some time ago, and haven't looked since. It's a fair-weather driver and not a show queen.

Thanks for any input / advice you have.

I think most ppl would recommend Maranello or Screamin Paintworks.

Out of curiousity... which shop quoted you 40k?

    The one in Beiseker.
I've seen several recommendations for Screamin' on here.. but the posts are very old.
I should go pay them a visit I suppose and see how much sticker shock I get with them.
I was out of work for a couple years so I'm trying to keep my costs down now to finish it.
I was even thinking of driving it down to Arizona or Texas to get it finished (I also need upholstery done)

I have used Screamin' Paintworks in the past, four times to be exact, and will not return after my last visit.

They used to do good work back in the day (10-15yrs ago) but that does not seem to be the case anymore.

I was at a car show in Saskatoon a couple years back and all the show quality paint was done by someone in Granum. South of calgary about 100km. Don’t know the shop though.

Won't they fix it for you if you're unhappy? When I was there they told me more than once if I had any issues at all to come back and they would fix it for me. Paint was flawless though so I didn't take them up on anything. They did a perfect match on 2 very difficult colors.

I used Screamin' twice in the last year and their work & service/attitude is phenomenal. Highly recommend.

You realize you are talking to the guy who made his own furniture out of salad bowls right?

As far as the colour goes, the work in that respect appears to have been done properly, for the most part. However, what irked me more was their attitude from a service standpoint. A few of the things that come to mind are:
    - Installed a non-OEM hood. We had discussed this prior to me dropping off the car and I was willing to pay the difference, after all, it was only $30
    - Failed to repair damage to the rear of the car, that I had requested and was going to pay for out of pocket
    - Due to the damage, the headliner had to be removed, it now creaks everytime the body of the car flexes
    - Overspray
    - The sunroof in one spot does not meet up with the roof line. This part is easily adjustable but yet (Dan/Dave, not sure which one) decided to argue with me and state that it was perfectly fine.

I find that the attention to detail, especially having discussed these items in person, was lacking and not consistent with my previous visits to them. Unfortunately, I can't let it slide considering the amount of money that was spent there cumulatively.

Heighton charges a lot because he's highly sought after, and for a reason. When we had our car in his shop he had a two year waiting list. Definitely for trailer queens, and not fun summer cars.

I’ve also heard Screamin Paintworks hasn’t gone downhill in recent years.

Interesting. Those things would bother me as well. Sorry you had a bad experience!

IVR does a lot of the stuff that ends up in World of Wheels, its a high/show quality shop.. I had talked to them about my Ramcharger, the quote came back at around 50 grand. If you want a show quality job, that seems to be the ball park on old iron. I decided to go a different route, as its going to be driver not a show vehicle...

So if you need no body work, what’s a paint job cost at a mid range shop? Does it get cheaper if you sand your vehicle down yourself?

Believe it not Maaco in Airdrie gets really good reviews in the Airdrie Dads facebook page.... I've thought about taking my G there too get repainted for cheap.

Maacos are all independently owned so it's a crapshoot in quality.

I just got my Acura ILX back from Speedy Collision in Airdrie, very happy with results.
I’ve used them on a number of occasions and always good work - owner is my former neighbour and he used to be the body guy for Lone Star Mercedes.

Yeah, the Airdrie car club is pretty fond of that Maaco and they've had some cars out at the local show that had pretty nice paint to my untrained eye. I was considering having them do some paintwork for me in the next few months.

I knew some of those restoration/show worthy paint jobs were expensive but $50k! Holy shit!

I had some stuff painted by National Collision 10+ years ago when they were all the rage and it was total garbage. They glued my sideskirts on with windshield adhesive which I just found out this past year when I had to remove them to replace my front fenders. Was some backyard mechanical bull shit that could have been avoided with a couple sticky clips and regular 3M tape.

Then had some stuff done at Screamin' which was great. But then during some follow up work maybe 6-7 years ago they totally botched it and their attempted 'fix' was even worse. I'll never step foot in their shop again and honestly left a bad taste for getting any body/paint work done since then.

Recently has some pieces (fender and bumper) painted by Speedy Collision (north Calgary location) and they turned out great. Paint match is bang on and price was reasonable.

I've considered getting a complete respray done on the Civic but its in the $10k+ range for disassembly, spray and reassemble. And thats not including any damage repair, which it doesn't need. Couple shops said if I did the disassemble and reassemble myself that would save a major amount of money. And if aftermarket parts are involved pretty much hand over a black check for fitting and prep.
