The point of free trade is just that, free trade. You add protectionism for certain industries, it’s no longer free trade. If protecting farmers because they can’t compete against other countries is a necessity, why even bother with NAFTA? Why stop at dairy farmers and processors? Why not protect other industries where we can’t compete internationally? Surely we shouldn’t be shipping our wealth to China when buying smartphones, why not protect the electronics manufacturing industry as well to keep our dollars here?
While I threw out subsidies over supply management as a solution, it really isn’t a solution because supply management’s sole purpose isn’t to protect farmers. It’s to protect the big 3 processors out of Quebec. Subsidies would keep the farmers happy, but the processors would lose big because they can’t control prices with free flowing imports. Subsidizing processors would be a huge optics problem.

The processors are fighting against finished products being imported because that eats into their market share (even though they have U.S based processing operations). They’d make a killing if they could limit it to the raw products (reduce their costs, but don’t need to change the cost to the consumer) which is what the farmers don’t want because foreign product is subsidized so heavily they couldn’t compete.

I like it. Definitely easier said than done since US/CAD has so many industries intertwined. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

"We shouldn't have to buy our friends." - Trump
I'm going to go ahead and say - If you got the money why not? Print away.
Cocoa $11,000 per ton.
We might not even need to wait that long if the Dems take the House in November Trumps trade rhetoric will be all but dead in the water as from my understanding the house will have to approve leaving NAFTA or approve any new trade deals that might take its place. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Why do we have a journalist representing us in this? O'Toole (shadow minister) seems way more qualified. Then again, we have a drama teacher running the country.
I wonder if she thinks she got the job cause she is a woman.

You have feminism misunderstood. She THINKS she got the job because of meritocracy. She GOT the job because she is a woman. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Liberals have a difficult time with self-evaluation, as the groper-in-chief has shown.

Looks like CRTC's protection of Canadian content is a sticking point as well. Trump now wants Canadian dairy and TV cartel dismantled for NAFTA to go through. That's like a dream scenario for me haha. I'll miss Nickelback on the radio though.
@flipstah just checking you know there's a TV cartel here too right? haha

The corporate lawyer with no foreign affairs experience seems "way more qualified" than the internationally educated journalist who's job it was to cover foreign political and financial news in London, Moscow, and New York and who actually has closed a major trade deal as a minister before? This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. I mean, I guess. If you try to marginalize someone's career to a single task it will sound like they aren't qualified, doesn't it.
Did such a good job in Moscow that she got banned from the country.

I've been doing a bit of a nostalgia trip down memory lane from when I was a kid rewatching some TV from the 90's. This got me into doing more about the TV cartel and "Canadian content" (which I already knew about), but WOW. It's pretty crazy how Canada's media market (including music) has shaped Canadian culture as we know it.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Looking back, I actually can see a bit of value in the Canadian content requirements. Some value. Not much, but it certainly is there, and I would honestly argue that due to how saturated global markets are with USA media, let alone our own entertainment content is already, it leads you to an understanding of how things were ever so slightly different up north here culturally vs in America.
We do? Like CBC regulations? CRTC? The dairy one threw me off. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Russian President Vladimir Putin has imposed retaliatory sanctions on 13 Canadian officials including five members of the Conservative government, two Liberals and one NDP MP, banning them from entering Russia.
---
Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird, who is in The Hague with Prime Minister Stephen Harper, said the sanctions are "a badge of honour."
"It's frankly a badge of honour for the prime minister and a badge of honour for all of Canada," Baird told reporters who are travelling with him and the prime minister on a trip to Europe.
"Instead of responding to calls from the international community to withdraw its troops, Russia has continued its provocative actions and this is completely unacceptable."
"Canadian officials named today by Russia aren't oligarchs, they are not people threatening to annex parts of peaceful neighbours by military force and we find this announcement deeply concerning," Baird said.
Canada has imposed economic sanctions and travel bans on 45 Ukrainian and Russian officials, in lockstep with similar announcements made by the U.S. and other G7 allies.
Leader of the Official Opposition Andrew Scheer also did such a good job in Moscow to be banned from the country, too I guess.
