Default What to do? Buy a 701SM or not?!!?

I have a lead on a '18 701SM here in Red Deer at a dealer. They want just a hair over $14,000 out the door. My current bike - '14 CBR1000RRA needs to go. I asked about a trade value and they came back with $6500. I could consign the bike at their dealership for a lot more than that - probably $10500 and they take a $500 finders fee. I've never done anything like that before so I'm not sure what I'd be getting into. But at least they'd be the ones dealing with the people coming to look at it... we all know how Kijiji is.

I'm tempted, but maybe I'm jumping the gun a bit. What would you guys do? I've wanted a 701SM for quite a while now.

I am surprised at the trade in but book is $6600 low $7800 high. Would think something that new would be mint/near mint. How many miles on it? I've been tempted to get another fireblade

Dope bike, ridden the shit out of it.

As for your bike it’s the end of summer, you’ll get more for it come spring. Don’t trade it in for 6500, that is a horrible deal for you.

Yah. It has 6000km on it. Needs a new rear tire tho.

Yah I think a trade in is not in the cards here. I think I might wait until next spring to act on this. I really want to ride one of those bastards. I wish I could just borrow one for the next month lol.

Do you know if the 701SM is getting a slight tweak for the '19 model year? Or is it basically staying the same from the '18 model?

The 16 was the unicorn, with the old engine. The 17+ has the new counter balance engine which is smooth and makes more power. The only “spy shots” out is the new 690sm , but we don’t get there here anyway.

Only changes from 18->19 could be colours and seat design

I see. Thanks. I saw those spy shots of the 690, too bad they don't export here.

I have a ‘16 with 25k. I love it and ride it daily.

I’ve ridden a ‘17 and the difference in vibes is negligible. Fully modded they make the same power, with the ‘16 making more midrange torque and the ‘17 making a hair more top end.

If I had to choose between both, it would come down to price and condition. I definitely wouldn’t pay $14k for a new one.

I use to own a 2015 cbr1000rr and then a 2017 701sm. I loved the Husqvarna around town. Tons more fun. Only time I missed the cbr is on the highway. I got rid of my cbr when it was still worth a decent mount, so I came out on top by switching to the husky. I think it's a better bike, but not for the price difference you'd have to pay. Unless you're really getting tired of sport bikes. The Husqvarna body pieces and build doesn't feel as solid and premium as the Honda.

I still can't get over how expensive they are. I really wanted one after my DRZ got wrecked by Muhammad but I couldn't justify it. Literally could buy two DRZs for the same price - my DRZ was 6800 OTD, and I was quoted 13700 OTD for a brand new 701. Cray Cray.
I was considering Zip's for a bit but he still wanted 10k and at the time he said it had close to 20,000 km. Again that's more than a brand new FZ/MT 09. Couldnt do it.

and I did not have the only say in the matter (most people just want it done ASAP and don't care about quality).

If anything we made a better decision because we had a consensus and were all on the same page.

    A few points about 701’s:

Can’t really be compared to DRZ’s, which are half the price because of inferior components and almost two decade old tech.

    Power-to-weight of a 701: 4.31lbs/hp
    Power-to-weight of a DRZ400: 8.18lbs/hp

Lots of tech in a 701/690 that makes it more enjoyable to ride.

    - significantly less vibes than any other single on the market
    - Way better suspension (WP w/ preload/comp/reb adj)
    - Brembo brakes
    - Trellis frame
    - Fuel injection
    - 10,000km maintenance intervals

DRZ’s are cool bikes, and a great budget purchase if you’re getting into SM. The only bike that compares to the LC4’s performance is an Aprilia SXV550, but those are very focused bikes with demanding maintenance intervals.

There’s a reason why the KTM 690 SMCR developed such a strong following, and Canada is finally getting a comparable product in the 701SM.

As for MT09/FZ09 comparisons, again, completely different scope of riding. This is what the 701 platform can do:

You really have to decide what you want out of a bike. I chose the 701 because it’s a very forgiving platform and allows you to develop a broad range of skills on a versatile chassis. I learned to drag my knee on the snake, foot out supermoto cornering on hairpins, off-road skills and urban environment hooliganism. The chance of having a high/low side learning these skills (some of which aren’t applicable) on a naked or sport bike is much higher.

Finally, it’s a bike that works for tall guys. I’m 6’7 and aside a ZX12R, most bikes I ride give that ‘bear on tricycle’ feel. I’m happy to keep it and I’m confident it will do well over 100,000km before needing a rebuild, but should I get a fair price my only interest is moving into the twin cylinder version of the same bike - a 990 SMR.

Hopefully this answers a few questions!

The only reason i don't have an SM is because i feel like that, and i'm 3" shorter than you. Maybe i need to go sit on a 701.....

Honestly, I want a 701 SM after this thread. As a second bike.

Well I guess the 2019 is the same as the 2018. I might head to the dealership here and see if they have any promo on the remaining 2018's.
