Speeding tickets in Calgary construction zones up more than 1300%

The one on Crowchild was a non stop strobe light for a while. Yeah that total helped slowing traffic down by hiding your device to reduce speeding.

if this really was in the interest of safety they'd just post a visible photo radar box at every construction zone and play ground zone, then people would actually slow down instead of just getting a speeding toll in the mail weeks later.

On crowchild, at times it was right at the end of the construction zone, so even if the drivers saw it, they sped all the way through it basically.

Ok... how do you know they are off hour sites? Could be people working any hour of the day? You don't know. I don't know. Nobody knows except those on the sites.

My issue is that too many people think they know everything about construction sites including how they are a waste of resources, how there is no work ever being done, how there are no people ever there etc etc.

The thing is some of these zones have reduced speeds for safety reasons. The whole new lane shift on Glenmore just past Crowchild is nuts and the fact people are coming from Glenmore at an 90-100km/h rate then have to slow down causes serious issues.

NB Sarcee is another zone with a reduced rate because people STILL can't figure out the lanes and how to use the round-a-bout and that bridge work is just downright scary.

Anderson construction is one of those areas that I agree is questionable about the zones but too many people speed through that area anyways and in a lot of areas the speeds are actually 60 not even 50!

14th is just a cluster fuck so the construction zones are warranted.

We aren't the experts on the matter so we shouldn't act like we are and just follow the rules and not get speeding tickets. But people don't give two shits and have been desensitized and just do as they please... same exact thing with the "playground zones".

Actually I asked a friend's husband who works in the industry grading before any actual roads are laid down.

In most cases the length of the zones is also put into place to account for possible big equipment, the delivery and dump trucks and...the workers cars and trucks. So I am ok with that....just not the ticketing in zones that have no work going on haha...

You are totally right....I can admit that I don't always know...but...


The large spot lamps are off as I drive through them??...the lanes are back opened or widened to normal??....these are indicators I use...

That one got me, as i started to accelerate up the hill. Pretty bs to put the thing at the end, you can't tell me they're doing it to actually incentivize people to slow down.

The one's south of calgary on Deerfoot can be painful... especially the ones where it is posted as 50km/h, no construction, no workers, no equipment, etc... and no 110km/h signs for as far as the eye can see. People just gradually speed back up after the few of us can't wait an longer lol

I only ever got hit with a construction speeding ticket and it was at 10pm "coincidentally" by that Crowchild one near Currie Barracks.

Lots of advanced warning is given, but the actual speed reduction doesn't happen until right before the work area. The reduced speed signs are removed and lanes are re-opened whenever workers aren't actively working - through one particularly well-travelled construction zone, I even noticed that normal speeds and lanes were reinstated over lunch hour! Their method seems to receive a better buy-in from drivers, as people seem to strictly adhere to the posted limits... Surprisingly, I guess that's what happens when people know the signs actually mean something and it's not just potentially another false alarm...

See, I can totally get behind this. I have no problems with enforcing speed limits when workers are present, but it's pretty ridiculous to be issuing tickets when nobody is around (ie: at 1AM in the morning on Deerfoot). If they put up signs when workers were present and took them down when they aren't, people might take them more seriously.

And don't get me started on the left/right lane closed signs they leave up all day, every day regardless of whether or not they're actually closed. Construction companies should be held accountable for disrupting traffic too.

I think 4km is a tad excessive... but lets take the Glenmore construction zone as an example... You have people going from a 80km/h zone (realistically doing 90km/h) to have to slow down to 90... Considering how bad drivers are and how unaware they are in this City, its just extra time to slow down enough to speed through the zone anyways.
