Yea I thought it was because I had cheap studless, so I spent some $$$ on Continental ExtremeWintercontact tires and looked up various car forums where people talked about this as well. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Nope - never again. The sight of seeing a shiny, polished intersection always pissed me off as I spent good $$ on what was supposed to be good studless tires which performed no better.
lol it was so bad that - I had to check that the (directional) tires were mounted on correctly! the previous cheap studless were mounted on backwards .....

Shit, there's only 49 users here, I doubt we'll even break 100
I'd settle for the shittiest drivers to at least be too scared to drive when it's icy out.

Why not make it 10x tougher to get your license? mandatory winter driving experience, make the tests $1000 lol Was it Mikko? You guys remember that Finnish member from the early days?

Tirebob set me up with some Studded Federal Himalayas and I was unstoppable with AWD.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I sold my TL for a truck and managed to find some one season old DM-V2s on OEM wheels for a really good price back in August. So it's back to studdless for me this year.
lifted yo - everyone knows 4x4 helps to stop and steer as well!!!!! /sThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Is there a calculatable crossover point for winter tires (based on the weight of your vehicle) where a narrower tire always outweighs any benefits from a wider tire with a larger contact area or vise versa? I understand that narrower is typically preferable for Winter tires but I am wondering if there is a specific point where that becomes true / not true.
No is the easy answer... Everything is calculable, but environments vary and even in the same environment, seasons vary year to year. You just gotta buy it based on the basics in that regard. If you are more worried about snow traction, go narrower. It is of course beneficial in the amount of pounds per square inch speed across the surface area of the tread face, but it also benefits with less plowing in front of the tire when pushing snow. You can absolutely over think things just as much as not giving things enough thought. Happy medium is more the goal with this. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I had some sort of Conti winter tire. Wasn’t too impressed. Terrible on ice. I actually slid straight through an intersection with them. Could not stop at all. Luckily everyone noticed (I honked the whole way through) and so I made it through in one piece. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

I did use the Inverno for a season on my F150 and they did decent enough. The WS2 is more aggressive but the Inverno held up fine for the compact snow/icy stuff. Kind of like a Latitude Xi2 in snow with not quite as good of compounding for deeper cold and ice. Bang for buck it was not a disappointment. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Ive been buying cheapest possible studdable winter tires, driving them for two winters, and then selling on kijiji for 80% of my cost and buying brand new again. Been doing this a decade and it works out to about 100 bucks a year to have tires that are brand new or one year old at most. And studs are a must for me, those January ice days are brutal. Also I think Ive driven RWD for 6 or 7 of those years lol. It was manageable and fun drifting everywhere, but being able to zoom away from everyone at lights with AWD is just better.

Instead, it's what many (not me) refer to as "Somalian Bumper Cars" on MacLeod Trail.
At a blazing 25km/h because their bald R-compound tires are the premium choice for winter.
@tirebob What are these lads running? Hankook iPike? Westlakes?
Don't think they make WS2 in my size, only the Inverno show up on my search. Thanks for your input, I might give them a try. Cost on them is cheap @ $145/tire in my 245/55R19 sizingThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
