Forum was closed a couple of months back. CSCC is still a club with events.

The CSCC hasn't hosted an auto-x event year to date. Last year they only hosted a handful in Red Deer with significant help. However, auto-x is alive and well in Calgary thanks to the SASC. There is even an event on Sunday you can still sign up for.

Unfortunately at last years CSCC elections nobody stepped forward to run autocross, and as such the position has been vacant and no autocross events were organized this year. This is one of the biggest problems with volunteer run organizations as few people are willing to put the time and effort in to make them happen.

Gotcha thanks guys. Been out of it and didn't know CSCC vs. SASC. Good to know there is a place for me if that's what I decide to do.

To be more specific a one discipline event club.

People have stepped up only to be shuned away.

Be a little honest with that statement. Yes, no one stepped up during the fall AGM in October 2017. I believe you forgot that you were there for the second AGM held in Dec 2017. A good person did stepped up to the plate, voted in, elected, and tried to organize a 2018 Autoslalom season. Just like you he volunteered to be a director (Are you still a director with the club?) and tried his best with what he had to go with. In fact we had three people step up to fill the needed positions of President, AutoSlalom, and Treasurer.

    TL;DR
Opinion: Previous board members that volunteered from my interviews and interactions - They are dedicated to motorsports and to the club operations. They tried without a lot of direction or assistance.
Fact: People have stepped up to the plate
Fact: Autoslalom director knew it would be an uphill battle. This was announced vocally and in detail during the business meeting(s), in the meeting minutes, and also in his resignation
Fact: Conflicts of interest exist on the board
Fact: Not transparent with fiduciary duty
    Fact: No governance
Fact: There is animosity towards other organizations and people in general
Fact: Financial Statements are non existent
    Fact: Clubhouse building is ...
Fact: No elections were held after I resigned as President... hmmmm ?

That is life of any nonprofit, but people I find are more willing to volunteer when there is a strong mission, good leadership, and most important (I believe the key) where there are friends or where friendships can be made. That's how I met you and many Beyond friends in person.

The question of work ethic under the volunteer umbrella - well that's another matter

You are correct, somebody did eventually step up. But my point stands, too few people volunteer and treat events as if they are being run by businesses and do not require at least a percentage of competitors to also volunteer to run the clubs/events. This is not unique to CSCC nor motorsports in general, but an ongoing problem for most volunteer organizations.

I think volunteering is a part of one's DNA that the majority of humans just do not have. My wife and I have volunteered and have (still do) sat as board members for numerous non-profits for over 30 years now. Race City, community board/events, community ice rink, school association boards/events, union activities, amateur wrestling, adult figure skating, farmers' market and there's probably some I've forgotten about. I am still the president of a board and am actively involved in the wrestling community even though I really have no stick in that game any more, partially because I have made a great number of wonderful friends over the years while volunteering in that space and partially because the lack of people unwilling to get involved.

Grassroots racing in Calgary, I seriously believe the lack of such in Calgary is mostly due to no organization of the masses despite the discipline. Hell, if Drumheller, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, etc etc, etc can manage to have grassroots racing facilities then a place like Calgary should be able to as well and one can not use the NIMBY excuse because they are everywhere. Racing does not have to be the realm of just monied or self centered people.
    Will fuck off, again.

Having been on boards myself in the motorsports community, things have changed. Its very hard to get volunteers. A few people make EVERYTHING happen. Which leads to a lot of centralization of power, and then those who hold the power wielding it in non-beneficial ways (or to the benefit of themselves) seems to be the way things go.

I've basically stopped volunteering. At this point, I'd rather pay an actual for-profit company to run things. Because if they don't do what I like, I take my money elsewhere, and it would lead to people appreciating what they have.

Time is stretched very thin nowadays for everyone. Very little gratitude is shown to volunteers. And at least in my chosen motorsport, there are a lot of big money people who give exactly zip back and champion for ever higher costs in the sport. I don't need to volunteer my free time for that.

Finding an organization that treats its volunteers well is rare, but valuable. I only know one, and it's the farthest thing. From motorsports imaginable. (Calgary folk music festival)
