How about this? If you're still open to Chromebooks. https://www.costco.ca/Acer-CB3-431-C...100417240.html

You can also check your local Costco, I recall seeing them before at a slightly cheaper price. It even comes with a wireless mouse.

This Acer Chromebook 14, as it's commonly called, looks like a MacBook air too, except it's plastic. It gets decent reviews and should be adequately quick for simple tasks.

I use my 3 year old Chromebook often, I pick it up to surf the net to look up something or to edit google drive stuff over my actual desktop.

Am I crazy here, or is that Chromebook really similar to the one I posted, except smaller eMMC, and slower processor? Is chrome OS that much leaner than Windows 10?

Absolutely. ChromeOS can run on much less resources than windows can. That Chromebook will feel faster even though the hardware is inferior.

IMO a new budget windows laptop that is snappy and usable is a core i5 8250 with 8GB ram and a SSD. These can be had for about $600 nowadays but you may need to swap in your own SSD which have been plummeting in price. You can get a 500GB ssd for around $100 and a 250gb for around $60.

Okay, wasn't aware the difference in OS performance although makes sense, as that was the whole point of chrome OS.

If chrome OS is such a big issue just install chrome OS.

On a side note that asus e406 won’t work with chrome OS but there is hundreds upon hundreds that do. Start here for ones that work 100% and then google others to find what modifications are required to install on not fully supported models.
    https://guide.neverware.com/supported-devices/

That site will also provide you with everything you need to install chrome os (well a fork of it that is near identical minus the ability to install non google apps)

Haha that I completely understand. My wife had a chrome book but found the OS to limiting so I got a MacBook off kijiji to replace it.

I can echo that chrome OS runs very fast on weak hardware and seems to fly with 4gb of ram.

Unless I'm misreading things, or you guys can educate me further, this seems like a solid choice on the low end :
    Asus
    E406MA-DB21 w/ Pentium Silver N5000, 4GB, 64GB eMMC, 14in FHD, Windows 10 Home. https://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX72406

Current processor, cheap price, decent size.
If you'll consider refurb and spinning drive, there's 3 options here:
    $230 ASUS VivoBook X541NA-RS01-CB 15.6” Laptop with Intel® N3350, 500GB HDD, 4GB RAM & Windows 10 - Black & Gold - Refurbished

    $330 ASUS VivoBook X541NA-RS91-CB 15.6" Laptop with Intel® N4200, 1TB HDD, 8GB RAM & Windows 10 - Black - Refurbished

    $350 ASUS VivoBook X541UA-RS31-CB 15.6” Laptop with Intel® i3-6006U, 1TB HDD, 8GB RAM & Windows 10 - Black & Gold - Refurbished

Well, decided that we liked the Chromebook concept. If anyone wants a dirt cheap one, the Acer Chromebook 15 is availible for $299 at the source. It's a generation old, but should be fine.

We went with the Acer Chromebook 14 (Acer CB3-431-C8ZZ 14" LCD Chromebook - Intel Celeron N3160 Quad-core (4 Core) 1.60 GHz - 4 GB LPDDR3 - 16 GB Flash Memory) for $335 from Gamercan (thanks shopbot!). Will report back when it arrives.

asked the wife how she liked it. It's been flawless, no issues, works perfectly. Nothing exciting about it, but just works. That's a win.

I'm a big Amazon guy, but check around, they aren't always cheapest. Shopbot helps as long as you are careful to compare specs.

Bump. @Mitsu3000gt find me the best deal under $250 range pls.

Usage: for my dad. I think I'm leaning to Chromebook so he can't cause another virus.
Probably the smaller ones so he can take on vacay.

Is the best deal the Dell?

Open to refurbs / openbox deals too.

    Bumpity Bump.

My awesome 2011 Mackbook Pro wants to retire. Not bad for 12 years.
I was looking at the new M2 Macbook air. Its just over $2k. Very nice indeed... But its $2k.

Then I thought. I only use the laptop for email, forums, booking flights, online purchases, portability for travel, researching products, banking, taxes, file transfers from phone to email/storage. Do I need to spend $2k..? I saw some videos on Chromebooks. It might be a better option.

I have no idea which brand to choose from. Budget is up to $700. 13 inch, higher level of ram and lightness for travel portability. Any recommendations?

If you want to squeeze more years out of it, then you need to not cheap out on the initial purchase.
    That's the thing I think I've learned.

They still have m1 mba. I actually prefer it. Keyboard has brightness settings, way cheaper. I don’t find our m2 mba any faster.

Both are bottom of the barrel base model 8gb. I’ve been doing lots of 4k hdr final cut work on it (using external ssd) and it’s been terrific.

I can’t see needing to upgrade it for a long ass time. My kids only use it for basic shit like your use case, and I’m still doing high end video work quickly on it.

$1169 using education store. Can’t go wrong.
