Default Affect of single speeding ticket on car insurance

I remember it used to be the first ticket after X many years did not affect your insurance premiums. Is that still the case? I've been with TD MM a long time, got my first ticket in 6+ years. Wondering how it will affect my insurance. Luckily my yearly renewal is right now, so at least it won't hit me until a year from now.

Not exactly an answer, but most insurance companies don't pull your abstract every year. So it has zero effect until they do that, and maybe zero after too.

If they are just doing a regular renewal without any changes in your policy, companies don’t usually pull abstracts. They can but typically don’t until you purchase a new car or add a different one etc. So you should be fine. They go by 3 years and after that time period they don’t care.

But if they do and see a recent speeding ticket the difference can be 20% or so. My brother’s insurance went up $200 a year after they discovered a ticket on his abstract from last year when he put on insurance for a new car.

Probably depends a lot on age and other factors too.

Thanks. I wonder if there is a way to force them to pull the abstract now (while it isn't on my record), thus increasing the chances they don't pull it within the next 3 years? lol. Maybe I can phone them and ask if there are any tickets on my record.

OP's usage of affect is correct if that's what you're referring to.

It's been a while since I've had anything on my abstract. But back when I was 24-25 and getting more than a few tickets, I was up on it then. If I recall the first ticket was treated like a freebee. Get your 2nd ticket though and DING your rate goes up by xx%. And then subsequent % for each after. (I can't recall but I think 3 tickets meant a +25% premium) But if you had 4 or more within 2 years, regardless of demerits, you were in some deep do-do with insurance, at risk of getting dropped.

This was 20 years ago though. Not sure how much has changed.

Actually, he's correct about the incorrect usage in the title.

"(The) Effect of having a ticket on insurance premiums."
"How does having a ticket affect my insurance premiums?"
