That's a planning issue and not so much an Olympics issue (though it should be a part of the criteria when evaluating bids). Calgary got a lot of use out of it's '88 facilities, as did Lake Placid. Vancouver's facilities have largely usurped Calgary's as the go-to for training Canada. While a good chunk of Canada's skeleton and sliders do their dryland training in Calgary, their on-ice is done in Whistler because a) facility is newer, and b) COP didn't have funding to update their facility.
So the Vancouver facilities will be mothballed if Calgary hosts again? And then Calgary's facilities will be mothballed if another Canadian city hosts?

Where Rio, Turin and Beijing (to an extent since they got both summer and winter olympics out of some of their facilities) go wrong is that they're built for one purpose with no plan (or desire to plan) for how to utilize it in the future. Anyone who's mad about not getting a new arena would likely be onboard for the Olympics as it would provide a leverage boost for negotiations and funding - similar to how it helped with building the original Saddledome and provided funding to expand McMahon Stadium too.
It would be hard for me to describe how little I care about skeleton.

There are lots of Olympic sports that I think are pretty neat that people do them.

Almost none of them can I wrap my head around why I should have to subsidize them.

Less than a handful are worth watching from an entertainment standpoint.

If I understand correctly, your argument is that we should spend tons of money to get the olympics here, and it won't be a waste because future olympians will train at the facilities?

Just throwing this out there. What if and I mean if we just had the olympics both summer and winter in the same venue every year. Think of how much money it'd save the world.

IOC needs to extract bribes from new suckers candidates every cycle or what's the point?

This is defeating the entire purpose of the Olympics - the opportunity for the IOC to profit from corruption.

I think the best scenario is for bids to become regional rather than specific to a single city. I think CONCACAF did something similar.

How is that a bad thing? You don't think that Olympians, current and future, shouldn't have proper facilities to train and play in?

I prefer to continue to see our olympians bankrolled by the bank of mom and dad like god intended.
