Agreed, although I enjoy figure skating. The point of hosting Olympics is to get infrastructure here with less tax contribution than building shit ourselves.
Olympic venues aren't infrastructure, and are mostly useless afterwards.

If all one is looking for is the new stadium to be built to use afterwards. $300+ million of taxpayer dollars for just it, VS $3+ billion of taxpayer dollars for the whole Olympics...

My choice is still zero for both.

When you hear that the g7 meetings in Quebec cost $600 million it doesn't really seem like the Fed's are throwing in that much.
Or the $5 billion renovation of Parliament.

Vancouver 2010 would disagree, the village was converted into housing and the skating oval is still ovally and skated on. Maybe we are just better at using our Olympic infrastructure than Europe or China?

If thats an option, sure.... but that's been peddled as a solution for damn near 20 years and there has been virtually no progress.

I somehow got into Russian Women's or more like teen figure skating and the drama surrounding Team Tutberidze is an awesome follow. Guilty pleasure for sure

Of course we should have Olympics. No brainer.

We should get rid of the hockey team and stampede grounds if we need to save money.

That's a planning issue and not so much an Olympics issue (though it should be a part of the criteria when evaluating bids). Calgary got a lot of use out of it's '88 facilities, as did Lake Placid. Vancouver's facilities have largely usurped Calgary's as the go-to for training Canada. While a good chunk of Canada's skeleton and sliders do their dryland training in Calgary, their on-ice is done in Whistler because a) facility is newer, and b) COP didn't have funding to update their facility.

Where Rio, Turin and Beijing (to an extent since they got both summer and winter olympics out of some of their facilities) go wrong is that they're built for one purpose with no plan (or desire to plan) for how to utilize it in the future. Anyone who's mad about not getting a new arena would likely be onboard for the Olympics as it would provide a leverage boost for negotiations and funding - similar to how it helped with building the original Saddledome and provided funding to expand McMahon Stadium too.

Radical thinking but perhaps the CSEC could fund and build their own arenas.

It would be good for my business… as it would for a lot of Calgary / Rockies business …

They announced a 40 mil Reno of cop yesterday as well so maybe that will help … not sure what they are fixing up…

Baby blue Sun-Ice jacket for everyone. Does anyone remember the Olympic volunteer prank one of the radio stations pulled in the mid 90's?
