    Default Governor General Spending

It's always interesting to hear governments say "we can't cut costs, there is nothing left to cut, services will be impacted" yadda yadda yadda.

But its painfully obvious that the amount of bloat in our system is incredible. Clarkson gets an annual pension of over $150k per year for having performed 6 years of work, in addition to billing the government for hundreds of thousands... billings that have no accountability behind them.

I would love to vote for a government that immediately required all spending programs to be gone through line by line. If this was relatively buried, just think of the other "millions here and there" that are lying around.

You could replace it with a basket of stale dinner rolls and I'm not sure it would be any different.

I heard this on the radio yesterday. A few years ago i would have been mad/surprised. But with the way our government gives away/burns money.. this is not something the surprises me. Just remember, the budget will balance itself so just sit back and relax.

The pensions are amazing enough. Especially since troodoo has been breaking tradition and appointing quite young GG. It's one thing for a 70 year old to have a lifetime pension. Julie Payette is 55.

They recently changed the pension rules for government workers, I think a couple years ago (only). People who started at say 20 years old and worked 35 years can retire at 55. Given that they would not longer pay into the pension, nor pay union dues anymore, their pay is probably close to 80%+ of their last year's salary.

Now the minimum age of retirement has been bumped up to 65.

Looking back at the past ten GGs, I'm not sure it is really breaking tradition when the average age at appointment is 59 and there are two who were younger than her (48 and 44).

Its interesting that European governments are accused of having an entrenched aristocracy of political class. Seems to me Canada is really no different.

like most goverment ran things the federal pensions are way more convoluted than that and there is literally a dictionary sized book to figuring it all out but the key points are 2% per year up to 70%(35 yrs) of the average of your 5 highest income years)

And the changes you are referring to are as such.

The date when you become a participant of the public service pension plan determines when you will be eligible to receive an unreduced pension benefit:

If you were participating in the plan on or before December 31, 2012, you are eligible to draw an unreduced pension benefit at age 60 with at least two years of pensionable service (or age 55 with 30 years of pensionable service); or,

If you begin to participate in the plan on or after January 1, 2013, you are eligible to draw an unreduced pension benefit at age 65 with at least two years of pensionable service (or age 60 with 30 years of pensionable service).

Theres also some pretty good survivor benifits for the spouse and kids (under 18) if you happen to die.

Hows that saying go, If you can't beat them, join them" I'll be retired at 56 with the full 35 years in.

I also don't believe ALL federal employees fall under the federal plan.

I believe some use the PSPP, which is different. Could be mistaken.

However, the pension isn't as rosy as some make it out to be. Averaging 8% return over 35 years, I'd be way ahead investing in my own rrsps/retirement vs pension.

And pensions from government are not stable at all. At any point in time, a gov could come in that forces changes via legislation, the Alberta PC's tried that.

In almost every pension, changes have been forced on pensioners at least once over the course of their working time or retirement. You have no idea how scary it is to realize your retirement is at the mercy of some asshole politician who can ruin it with the stroke of a pen.

At least with the stock market, you can always pull your investments and go to cash.
