    Default Airdrie-ites, commute?!

Moving to the deep SW of Airdrie in a month. Curious what people are doing there for getting to and from 8th st. Seems that the Balzac overpass is a bit of a nightmare with any traffic as it backs up northbound due to a shitty light situation.

Anyone trying the gravel road on 8st, under Stoney and connecting with Country Hill?

I don't live up there but often commute the opposite way during the AM/PM rushes, that gravel road you're speaking of would probably be a good option. Certainly I've never seen traffic backed up in the afternoon NB on that road at the 4 way stop west of Balzac. AM rush, you might be better going a mile west to get SB out if Airdrie, then EB to the 4 way and then a right on to that gravel road as SB 8 Street can get quite backed up in the mornings.
    Will fuck off, again.

So 40th is supposed to be completed in the next bit here. Unsure timing but getting onto deerfoot south should be done sooner than later. It is the over-pass (so for you getting home) that will be the big one and will be quite a while until it is complete. Also we moved a bunch of stuff so they can twin the balzac bridge and the new 4-way stop there (which does help for some people) is only temporary until they can put in a round-about. Not sure timing there either, but it is coming.

A new route for that area seems to be (going home) get off at yankee, left at COOP, then down to Walmart then up - over the overpass to Hillcrest, etc. Do the reverse for going out. It is going north to try and go south, but it might be a lot less hassle depending if you're east / west of 8th. I head from the Home Hardware side, go under yankee, go dual left, then down to walmart and up over 40th to get my kid on the far west side. Not sure if it is actually quicker but feels better since you're moving and can get up/over the train.

How far SW are you...a little off topic but for anyone considering moving here, try and buy North of Yankee, it's a lot easier to get DF via Edmonton Trail. We live in Midtown and for the first year I figured Yankee to DF was the fastest, some mornings it'd take upwards of 25-30 min to get there. I took a look at the map one day and now it takes 7 minutes and I'm rolling on DF from my garage lol (8th to 1st to Edmonton Trail)...I'd hate to be living in the South and have to deal with that mess, good luck and welcome to Airdrie!!

I grew up in A-town, right by the water tower. Of course, back then it was a smaller place. I remember when it became a city.

I seen that thing... What is for anyways? Lol.
Did they used to hold the entire town's water supply in there or something?

Water towers are more about pressure than supply.

My go to move was west to centre street.

If you're set on getting on hwy 2, forget Yankee Valley even exists and go all the way up to Veterens blvd

Oh god, you bought a Mattamy home. Good luck with that.
As for route, 8th in the AM is fine, you’ll hit traffic at the stupid stop sign but it shouldn’t be too bad. If you don’t want to deal with that, there’s a gravel road along 8th at city limits that goes east/west. East on that goes across the train tracks and spits you out right beside Zytech and west on that gets you right in front of that Stampede City RV storage. Like someone else said, 40th to Main Street and then to Uankee valley is also a good alternative as you won’t get screwed by the train.

PM is harder...my go to move is just to take Centre St and go onto 8th. Less traffic going EB on 566 than having to deal with the shit show caused by the stupid stop sign going WB. 40th ave is also an OK alternative, I always hear that the yankee valley exit is still backed up onto the highway after the extension they put in but I haven’t seen it myself. Just get over late as most people get over early.

I’m like a minute up the road from you, commute in the morning is usually 25-30 mins and the afternoon can be anywhere from 45-1:30.

Someone else probably knows better than me, but I’ve seen them at 4:50, 5:30, 6:15, 6:40, 7:20. Seems like every half hour or so. PM here’s I think there’s three that go through during rush hour.

Something that I don’t usually see mentioned is that Airdrie people seem to do the early shift.

Traffic is pretty quiet, especially if you'll be at your office for 6. Except for when the highway gets a good dump there doesn't seem to be a lot going on. Same with your commute home, at 3/3:30 it won't be too bad. Where's your office at?

Work in north end or south end of Calgary?

Whenever I need to go to Airdrie from downtown, I try to get past 64ave NW before 3:30pm.

3:30pm it gets slow. 4pm, it's basically 40-60km/h from calfrobe to 64ave NW.

Or you can take my advice and go to the Edmonton Trail exit lol multiple ways to get there, the only downside is getting stuck behind fucking idiots who don't realize the playground zones start at 830, it's says right fucking under the sign!!! Drives me nuts.. And yes it's a marked 50 zone with a playground zone in the middle. If you do take Edmonton Trail, watch out for cops in the morning, drive exactly 50 and make sure you don't do any rolling stops at the stop sign, my wife got a ticket for that.

I used to work in that exact building north of coco Brooks. I'd bet your drive is going to be 35/40 min assuming you can work 7-330 or something.

For example today I left at 645. Was at McKnight (stopped) at 705. At harry hays federal building at 715 and in the centennial parkade at 720. Honestly since you can stick in the far left lane for quite a while, you dodge a bunch of the morons.
