Spending money on a decent UPS vs spending $200 on a new router every couple of years... I think I'd rather buy the UPS.
It almost doesn't hurt with how much faster broadband is getting. With WFH and school from home, couple of family members were having problems with internet and wifi. Upgraded to Unifi APs but still getting poor performance. Turns out even a 5 year old router can't handle gigabit properly, even with gigabit ports. Swapped to a current router, and went from 250mbps to 950mbps on Shaw.

My ~7 year old router had no problem with Gibabit, but I did upgrade for WiFi6 and 4X4 MIMO.

Yeah consumer grade routers just can't handle it. I even upgraded to an Aruba S2500 switch in my place just to ensure I'd have zero issues with a OpnSense box going.

Remember the days of the Linksys WRT54G that would literally shut down on itself if you put too much traffic through it.. ahh those were the days.

Let me clarify, non techy people buying average consumer routers 5 years ago end up with one that can't handle gigabit broadband.

I have no doubt that your 7 y/o UFO alien ship looking router can handle all your needs no problems.

It was actually just a basic R7000 - nothing special or alien-like at all and neither is the new one.

Haha I have the alien ship router. Got it when it first launched and it has been rock solid! Would highly recommend if you dont mind the size

Typically they are very good indeed, but usually what you're paying for is the third band which I don't personally need so it ends up overkill for my usage. Looks super cool though haha.
