Default Router died on me this morning. Need opions for a new one. (preferrably ASAP)

Had a Netgear Nighthawk R7000 AC1900, it did the job well enough for the past 3-1/2 years and had good enough range to get to my garage. It died today amd that seems kind of short lifed? It just keeps resetting itself repeatedly, non-stop. A continuous ping shows no connection every 8 seconds. Not even factory reset button will work.

So, with the deals this week, what can anyone suggest for under $200? I don't need anything super fancy, just wifi, and the more ports the better. Bestbuy has a bunch that look like decent deals. Any suggestions?

Asus rt-ac86u aka ac2900. I chose this one after a lot of research, and as far as I'm concerned there's nothing better at anything close to the same price. I was considering installing to in the aimesh setup but one gave me great signal strength everywhere in my house and yard.

Well that was definitely ASAP, lol. Do you have this one? Has it been decent for you?

Stupid question probably but was the reset you did the hard reset with the paperclip? And was it running the latest FW? Most people I know have never updated their router FW.

Honestly I would buy another R7000 or one of it's cousins (which are also on sale). I've been using mine since ~2013 and it's been flawless so far (knock on wood).

Smallnetbuilder's #1 ranked router of all time is still a Netgear R7800:

    https://www.smallnetbuilder.com/tool...rs/router/view

    In 2015 the R7000 was #1.

If you want to try a different brand though there are a few others under $200 in the top 10. SNB's reviews are my favorite and the most thorough I have found.

Yeap, the paperclip hard reset. I didn't have the very latest update that just came out a month ago, but it was updated prior to that. I checked the power adapter too and it's got steady voltage. The thing just keeps restarting every 8 seconds.

It had been acting odd the past 2 days, like wifi had reverted back to it's factory names, passwords, etc. both yesterday morning and the day before.

I had a similar issue on an Asus router. Was a bad power supply.

I checked the power cord itself, and it was a good steady 12.6v DC. I ended up buying the Asus Extraslow recommended and Asian_defender seconded.

Bad week for my electronics, my coffee grinder also bit the dust, and my tablet seems fucked too. Thankfully this all happened on Black Friday week, lol.

Yea you usually cant go wrong with ASUS routers right now. Im personally leaning towards a decentralized setup ie. router + WAP like a ubiquity setup.

My parents Nighthawk also failed after about 14 months too.

I have the TP link deco m5 mesh routers, they work quite well and I have no complaints. On sale right now for $219.99 for a 3 pack.

Good deal on the R7000 if anyone is still looking for a router:

I've been battling getting a decent signal with any router over my bonus room for years... gone through a number of routers, but haven't dropped the bucks on the R7000 or the new Asus3200 lines (been using linksys 1200)

I only ever use it was a wireless bridge, so I can extend my LAN... would having multiple AP's in a Mesh be a better setup?

    Any recommendations?

Wait for that Asus router to go on sale under $200 on boxing day. Buy two, keep one sealed and see how your signal strength is. If needed set the second up as AImesh.

    Easy, inexpensive, will work.

AImesh looks pretty awesome... I wouldn't say $400+ is cheap to cover 2000sqft, but I guess its not bad neither.

I'm pretty sure you'd only need one, but if you do for some reason, the second one is insurance. They get nice range as standalone units. I never needed the second one.

Anyone who didn't get the black friday deal, the same Router is on sale for boxing day at bestbuy and possibly elsewhere for $179.

A buddy of mine is buying two on this sale and setting up the AImesh with a wired backhaul because his house has Cat5 already. I think he's going to be really happy with his system. Wireless backhaul is an option if you need too.

Well mine has lasted all of 10 months. Was just doing routine internetting today and my internet suddenly died. Shaw modem showed fine, but the Asus wasn't receiving a signal. Hooked the modem straight to computer, and it was fine. Tried a bunch of stuff before I had to hard reset the Asus, which worked. Maybe a one-off, or maybe the start of it shitting the bed.
