If you're single and a "professional", it's simple. Find a job that are willing to hire non-Americans, and they will endorse you through a H-1B Visa.

A little more complicated if you have a spouse that isn't a "professional". They won't be able to work (legally) at all until you become an American citizen.

Just google H-1B to get started.
Don’t need to be a citizen. Can get a green card eventually and work. Takes some time though.

I wonder how it works if both partners are professionals (ie professional engineers) but only one of them was the one who got the original job. Any idea if they put much value on having the FE exam complete south of the border for work?
It seems that all the engineers in my company south of the border really aren't engineers. If you move to Colorado or Texas I think they can give you a PE from your Peng without the Fe exam

My understanding is the FE isn't really needed if you are an experienced professional. If you have minimal amount of experience or are still an EIT it might be needed.

Also from my anecdotal experience is when Canadians move to the us they still don't get it. Even if they don't need the Fe exam

Yeah, in the States only the civils (generally) bother getting the PE. Most engineering disciplines don't give a shit about the PE designation.

Oil and Gas producer and field workers in Canada mostly don't even need a P.Eng. Unless you are stamping drawings, which is mostly an EPCM thing, it's worthless.

True Story. I don’t even own a stamp.

    Same, never got one.

I wouldn't say it's entirely worthless. There's probably jobs that don't utilize it, but still require applicants to have it.

The way that APEGA portrays their ring ceremonies, I'm surprised that Pope Nagendran isn't blessing each of you with a holy stamp.

I’m Camp 7, so no idea how APEGA does it. Ours was some cult like shit. Haha

That said, designation is totally valuable. In the sense no one would hire me without it lol.

lol, what's worse is there is a dinner after you get your P.Eng. I never went to that but how fucking pompous do you need to be to be in a room of all new fresh P.Engs patting each other on the back?
    Gross.

My class (of 25-30 or so) had our own dinner. Than a massive kegger. Was actually a blast.

the P.Eng application process is such a nightmare for me. it's been holding me back career wise for a couple years. I can't get it approved.

Financially my company is limiting my growth cause I don't have it, and opportunities in different groups/organizations. I'm incredibly frustrated how dependent I am of that designation

Sounds like they are cracking down, I had a friend who also had to apply twice and get some more experience. Eventually got it though.

While we are off topic, yeah, APEGA has nothing to do with the rings, or the ring ceremony. That's Camp 7 (or the other camps across the country).

Some companies only care about the professional P.Eng/P.Geo designation and even a bunch of the old guys give a big middle finger to APEGA not bothering. For EIT and GIT, I've heard through the grapevine that someone from APEGA say that unless your company demands it, do not pay it, accumulate your hours and just worry about the professional designation.

I've really gotta get on my P.Geo application. I just don't want to pay for all that shit if I can get on with a company who will! Plus it's somehow backlogged like a year. How the fuck that happened...

Years ago when we had the ring ceremony, we had one engineer at our table show us what you guys were supposed to read. Cult-like doesn't even begin to describe it. And this is from a guy growing up in the church.

I still think it's random. A co worker with majority project controls experience flew through the process and got it. We applied the same time. My application structure wise was about the same, but majority of my work has been field/design work. A bad reviewer can just screw you up hard

That would be Camp 18 actually. (Yes I am camp shaming, just like we do with join dates)

I stopped paying for my Geo.I.T designation out of spite last year. Should I get on my hands and knees and beg to be let back in?
