Shit. I haven't worked with that guy for a long time, but back when I did I had a positive opinion of him. If anyone has the "straight goods" I'd love a PM with the deets. I'll be reaching out to him as well.

Not much I can say or talk about.
He is a good friend and has been positive influence in my career.
Definitely reach out privately to him directly.

Have engineers in industry generally stopped taking kickbacks (hunting/fishing trips, sporting events, goods, cash) from service providers in exchange for business? 2012-2014 was getting out of hand with engineers and unethical behavior...the worst I saw was in drilling or the abandonment/reclamation racket. Rules were implemented at my past and current company to audit engineers when the downturn hit and the backlash/anger from engineering was hilarious...”why should we have to justify using the provider with 30% higher costs that I’ve exclusively used for 3 years and have repeatedly had operational issues resulting in supp AFEs!?!!”

I must have been a naïve because all I ever got was drunk.

Don’t mean to paint a bad picture for all engineers, it’s obviously just a few bad apples, but loyalty to certain service providers for personal benefits, even if it was just getting drunk at flames games, was definitely a thing.

It was a thing for sure. And it's gross.

Thomson Cabinets in Red Deer sounds finished. The owner of the building (not the company) came in and kicked all the workers out and changed all the locks on the doors. Really really bad. A lot of laid off Westridge workers went to Thomson earlier this year when Westridge went bankrupt. Now they have to deal with this. Apparently the owner of the company kept everyone in the dark over not paying his bills. They still owe my gf's work $20k for work they had out sourced to them.

Silver lining; gf's work just got busier from the home builders who used Thomson.

I heard a sales person from HakerBughes spouting that they have clients that virtually blackmail them so they have sales people who get stuck going out and getting alcohol poisoning with some Euro-trash customer who says "hooever buyz me drlinkz - getz wvurk!!"

I assume this has to be exaggerated, otherwise we're on the edge of another Siemens-level of scandal, but who knows. Pretty disgusting, for sure - even if it's half true.

I for sure worked with people who took "gifts" from service companies that were excessive. I had one old engineer tell me his personal rule was that anything you could "eat, drink or fuck" in one evening was fine, but you shouldn't have any "leftovers" to take home.

I'm too simple minded to keep track of favours I owe someone, or that they owe me. Probably why I didn't get offered anything of value.

I just had a sleezy salesman buy me lunch yesterday.

    Rampant corruption.

I annoyed a member of the RCMP white collar crime group earlier this year trying to get him to draw a line in the sand, he was giving us a presentation on corruption and accepting gifts.

Fuck I wish my business was selling enough to go to a big football game in the US. I'd better get on that.

I have heard about the IT one for months as some contractors are only getting month by month renewals. Didn't know finance is part of the deal.

I heard from an inside source that Pembina is starting to trim a little fat. Nothing making the news but some dead weight.

Lots of cash being burned on their plastics facility. Plus the Kinder Morgan acquisition earlier this year.
