Our work has started to pick up, but what we do is directly tied into plant efficiency, so producers seem to be quite keen on that lately.

Busier now than I have been in almost two years, and a busy first half of 2019 scheduled already.

Plus my personal business has really gone gangbusters these past couple weeks, considering things cratered at the end of October all through winter last year. Things looking good on my end

Service sector is anticipating a slow year and starting layoffs. The fact that producers are doing it at the same time and there is no lag is bad news bears. I bet the trickle down effect of this one is much quicker as well and the restaurant owners, hotel, and construction etc people will see it again before too long.

I quit my job back in August. We were steady and it was a pretty safe positiion, I was there for 6 years. When I started , the owner told me that he was going to retire in 5 years and planned to offer the company for sale to each of the managers. He sold a portion to one of the other managers early last year and when I asked him about it, he told me he wasn’t interested in selling anymore then he already did. Not the only reason but it was the icing on the cake so I quit and decided to start my own shop. I haven’t signed a lease yet but that is still my plan. I have quoted a bunch of equipment and hope to see some orders Q1 sometime. Then I read the comments in these threads and it scares the shit outa me but Im working my ass of and hoping all the stress is worth it in the long run.

I went elsewhere... got paid half as much, no flexibility for time off, and a supervisor that hovered over me. So I left that and went back to school...

Now I get paid nothing to work 80 hours a week, totally get treated like I'm worthless, and have every little thing I do scrutinized and graded.

I feel like I am slipping backwards sometimes...
Well apply to the Railway we would love to have you ! I mean at least you will be well paid for feeling worthless and under appreciated ....
A Ferrari is a high maintenance chick, you spend money regardless of what you do with her. You can baby the C63, or slap on all seasons, and you won't be spending anything but yearly maintenance. Of course that's like dating a stripper and refusing to fuck her, which would make you gay.

I'm curious as to what exactly people are willing to settle for with respect to income? $80,000 annually? $100,000? $120,000?

What are the CP Rail positions paying?
    Will fuck off, again.

I remember the days when I used to exaggerate how much work engineering school was good times.

These days me, and another buddy who did engineering, bitch about daytime students and their lax work ethics and schedules lol.

No matter what you're doing, you'll always think you have it worse than the next guy.

Actually, you know who has it worst Junior and intermediate accountants. Seriously so much work for not enough pay.

Well depends really on what you go into. Conductors and Engineers can easy make 6 figures with a full pension and benefits and I know we have brought on some pretty useless people into Sourcing and they started at 80k ...

Anyone have the final numbers from the Cenovus lay offs yesterday?

Heard something about CNRL as well, but couldn't confirm.
I heard from a reliable source that the CNRL news was a hiring freeze, not layoffs at this point

We have a few guys that were ex-CP/CN and find the Air Force life way easier on the body and family. You don’t get OT but the pension, pay and benefits for the job you do can’t be beat.

Train engineer sounds like fun to me, I like the feeling of being in motion. The one thing that would stop me is the time I would spend away from home.

Yeah, but I swear I'm not exaggerating... I track my hours and since started I average about 75 a week. In the past 3 weeks I've logged 80 to 85 a week. It is fucking ridiculous, I go early everyday to study before class, then spend my evenings and weekends trying to stay on top of shit.

It isn't even close to enough either, I actually have to strategically sacrifice certain tests that I don't have time to learn the content for.

32 percent of the 1st years failed out of the first term last year, and I am hearing that our group is currently doing even worse. They had to do a little presentation on what to do if you fail more than 3 courses last week because it is such a problem... the presentation conclusion point was "50-60 percent is totally fine for this program!"

This school has a reputation for working students to the breaking point... I should have gone to a university instead, this is such bullshit.
What program are you in? This sounds treacherous.
