There is a lot of chatter from people I know right now in O+G engineering; apparently things in Calgary are really not good right now.
A lot of our clients have dialed back programs even more than they were planning on doing in Q4 2018. Maybe we'll see and end of year for activity like we did in 2017 but that's wishful thinking.

Half the Calgary O&G engineering firms supports major oilsands expansions, which are never coming back. A lot less manpower required for the smaller day to day engineering work, and minor facility projects.

Can confirm this is worse than 2016 but no one seems to think so outside of O&G.
Feds are more concerned with the GM plant closure and 400 job losses.

Just ask the bank of Canada. Economy is on fire!

And by on fire, I mean housing prices in Vancouver and Toronto are super high!

BoC has revised GDP growth from 2.1 to 1.7. They know it's going to be rough.

A new baseline has been established, so people are just getting used to it.

I'm just thankful that my business has zero to do with the Calgary economy... It's noticeably rough out there.

What is up with that. I've had to walk away from great opportunities in YVR because the remuneration versus cost of living equation is so out of whack.

I find it really odd as well. In other coastal cities where the cost of living is extreme ie Auckland, NZ or Sydney, Australia the salaries definitely reflect the high cost of housing in particular - ie most salaried positions over 100K. But for Vancouver when I was looking in salaried IT positions you were super lucky to get 70K. Engineering looked to pay around the same amount.

Partially because it is not not a strong industry (or more) that drove up the Vancouver housing market, it wasn’t international money, mostly illegal money, flooding into Canada via ridiculous tax loopholes used by criminal enterprises. In contrast, in Calgary strong house prices have been backed by a booming oil and gas industry for over a decade which could afford to pay extremely high salaries. Vancouver doesn’t have the same profitability and growth in business to support ridiculous salaries.

Sorry to hear it SP- hope things work out for ya.

My sister & her husband are in YVR and have made it work but my eyes water at the size of the mortgage and tax bill.

Yeah I don't know why it is like that.
Because so many people, like yourself, are willing to live and work there for said poor pay?

That basically sums it up. How do so many people live in San Francisco and Los Angeles when rent is insane? Because that is where they want to live

Not getting on your shit for the decision, but any time demand is greater than supply, price goes up accordingly. If you could have O&G wages AND live in YVR area, who wouldn't want to live there?

Because all the money there is from China rather than from the local economy. Vancouver is awesome but I would never want to work there.

Depends on the industry. Friend is an Registered Massage Therapist...making bank.

Sinopec posted for a full-time Jr. Geologist (one position). I'll be interested to know the total number of applicants for that job lol. For perspective, I worked at CNRL in the summer and there were two positions. Almost 500 people applied for just those two student positions.

Maybe I should start a car wash... or sell my 4R and fake life 'gramin

I have no idea why anyone is still going to school with hopes of working in O&G.

For sure, I am speaking from an O&G perspective where I imagine jobs in Vancouver are almost nonexistent unless you're a native american consultant or something haha.

I've always wondered how much massage therapists keep from the $100/hr or whatever the clinic charges. If it's 50-70% and they are busy 8hr/day that could be some really good money, especially if they work in a spa and not a physio place where they are allowed to accept tips.

I'd actually love to be non-dependent on O&G, but in Calgary anyway I can't think of much else I could do that pays even close to as well. I'd love to own my own business of some kind or be disconnected from uncertainty somehow, but it's too late haha - maybe I should have gone into the medical profession or something if I wanted something that was recession-proof.

Geology jobs are rough right now (you would know better than me though), I know 1 person who has been out of work since 2014/15 pretty much. Same for some engineers. I work in Marketing which is a bit less dependent on company plans/production and even though I have been incredibly fortunate to have never been laid off in my career, I still never feel safe and I never expect to be working at the same company for the rest of my life.

I mean if they are content working outside of Canada, it probably isn't a huge issue. But I'm betting a lot of new grads that are resistant to move will be wasting their degree. I'm interested to see young professionals in O&G if they are going to pivot to other industries with everything we see now.
