I know what they are, I scanned through the link again before posting. Unless there are many years of service, a company can let an employee go for little cost.

Family friend was less then 2 years at a company and other than boss not liking the individual (was mutual) they had no grounds to fire but they did. Paid out based on the standards and they moved on in life.

That's all I'm saying, if a company wants to get rid of a employee they can at any time, for a fixed cost.
I don’t think anyone was debating that years of service is a factor in how much severance needs to be paid.

There is also some legal distinction between termination pay and severance pay. You would have to ask someone who knows more about those distinctions but severance involves some precedence and accounts for other factors.

How much you receive as "reasonable notice" is based on the employers view of the Bardal Factors, (ie Age, length of service, previous employment history, transferability of skills to find reasonable alternative employment, level of employment etc.)

How companies approach the reasonable notice varies significantly, some go on the high side and go for a higher percentage of releases, others go very low and fight the ones that come back (costing legal fees). Realistically, unless the employment was for a very short period of time or there are other factors (such as performance etc.), most professional roles should always be getting in excess of employment standards.

Obviously not a proxy for legal advice, and I haven't tested every scenario - but this might be good for someone who is just high level interested in how it works: http://www.bardalfactors.ca/whats-reasonable

The engineers that were taking legal action a few years ago against the Big Box EPC employers were looking for 1 month per year of service. Their standard termination was the legal minimum which meant those with 8 years of service were getting the same 8 weeks as folks with 20 years. LoL! The 1 month/year was supported by plenty of case law and was typically capped at 20-24 months. Most settled for obviously way way way more than they would've got and gave a lawyer $8k. Well worth it.

Severance is not the correct term, but it sure feels like the same. It's called "in lieu of notice" or something along those lines. The concept being that the employer could have told you "you've been working here 9 years but times are bad, so your last day will be September 26, 2020" and simply kept paying you to do your job while theoretically never being out of pocket... LoL.

I guess from reading some of the stories it's seems like some scenarios were way more drawn out than they needed to be but without knowing the exact details I'm just speculating.

Not really news to most of us, but some confirmation of scale of the axe on the Cenovus side of the transaction.

    2,000 jobs over 2 months.

I could be misunderstanding you, but the 2000 is the combined Husky and Cenovus group is it not? Since they are all Cenovus employees now.

    Yes.

Good question. I don’t know those details. I assumed when it said Cenovus this was cenovus side only but you might be right.

I still maintain the true long term layoffs between the two companies will be well over 2,000. I wouldn’t be surprised if the final headcount is double that.

Increase in Alberta unemployment by 0.05% in one press release. Crickets from socks.

I’m curious what you guys want from Trudeau...stop the sale? Make them hold onto overlapping jobs? Or you just want some attention to AB?

    Pipeline and export capacity.

Consolidation of entities only happens because they can’t survive alone.

Trudeau is hammering us and promising (insanely) large carbon hikes. Players can’t survive. He shouldn’t be doing this at that scale, especially during a pandemic.

    Make sense?

That does make sense. Complaining that Trudeau hasn’t tweeted about this is just funny

My wife was told it was all day, tuesday and thursday. I dont think the norms necessarily fit every organization. Seems like a real waste of manpower to tell a whole company to sit by the phone for 8 hours if you are only laying off for 4.

Unfortunately they are not done for the day across all groups. It is still ongoing.
