I was laid off and haven't found SIMILAR work yet
I was laid off and found a new job in the same industry
I was laid off and found a new job/career in a different industry
I'm still plugging along with the same company I've always been with
I quit my job and went elsewhere
We're all fucked

You'd be surprised. I worked with someone who asked to go to the washroom right in the middle of his HR layoff meeting and peaced out. Then he said he was sick and tried to claim short term disability. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

In my early career, I have disabled many accounts of vacationers and the 1st day they return they get escorted from front door directly to HR office. And they keep calling helpdesk from hotel on why their cell phone is dead and we had to sidestep that saying we will talk with Telus/Rogers on the issue. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Ha, not the same, but in the auto industry in Ontario back in 09 there were a lot of lay offs, and my favourite story was an employee at a supplier that was meeting with an auto manufacturer was pulled out mid meeting and let go. Someone had to take their place in the in the meeting and let the client know. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
The best was when we got the laptop back, everything was cleaned out except the OS still boots and the windows background was some dude getting packed from behind by another dude. Good old Windows 3.1.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
No, you CAN always laid off people on mat leave if you can prove that position no longer exists. There were a lot of sap stories on MSM when 2015/16 laid off wave came and the worker already used up EI on mat leave and got nothing after returning to a job no longer exists. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. But from a logistic perspective, you just have to make sure you got extra i's dotted and t's crossed to make sure a lawsuit isn't a result.
Think of it as 2 identical cars in a Park N Ride, one with steering wheel lock and one without, you will always steal the one without 1st but it's isn't impossible to take both.

lol.. had a new hire that knew it weren't working out and knew end is coming but filed disability before paper work was done. Got another 6 months out of the deal and still got the balls to use us as refence afterwards. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
We had one smart-ish low performer start an HR complaint against another employee alleging harassment. Fuckinf had to document all her performance issues for 6 more months before we could lay her off.

Lazy people do all sorts of bullshit just to avoid people figuring out they're too stupid to do work related tasks well.
We had a co-worker when I worked for Sanjel who would show up drunk and direct trucks full of nitrogen where to drive in the middle of winter. Managers ignored it for the better park of a year until they couldn’t handle it any more, they tried bringing him in to let him go but he mentioned to her the week before that he had a drinking problem. HR let him do rehab instead and he still had a job until Sanjel folded up shop a few months later. My wife had a co-worker who faked pregnancy and a miscarriage to string out here firing for almost a year if memory serves, HR eventually got her but it took the better part of 2 years to build the needed paper trail. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. sig deleted by moderator, because they are useless
Unless you're in a "professional" role where letting someone go might cost the company $$$$(contracts etc). I thought you could fire / layoff people without much if any reason. Pay them out 2 weeks and move on.
Or am I way off here?

I know what they are, I scanned through the link again before posting. Unless there are many years of service, a company can let an employee go for little cost.
Family friend was less then 2 years at a company and other than boss not liking the individual (was mutual) they had no grounds to fire but they did. Paid out based on the standards and they moved on in life.
That's all I'm saying, if a company wants to get rid of a employee they can at any time, for a fixed cost.

is facing or might face garnishment action (a legal procedure where the court can authorize a creditor to take money owing to them from sources such as an employee’s pay cheque, an account at a financial institution, or money owed by others)
