Suncor Ontario offices moving to Calgary. Neat.
I was laid off and haven't found SIMILAR work yet
I was laid off and found a new job in the same industry
I was laid off and found a new job/career in a different industry
I'm still plugging along with the same company I've always been with
I quit my job and went elsewhere
We're all fucked

700 positions, wonder how many will be willing to move and how many of those jobs actually materialize here. I bet Suncor expecting a lot of staff can't and would just be let go.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
If they are sitting on an average detached house in Oakville/Sauga, they can buy 3 detached homes in Calgary.
Suncor had previously announced 5% layoffs over the next 6 months and 10-15% over the 12 months after that. So this may be a chunk of those jobs. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
If Suncor gives them a choice to relocate, might not be bad if the family can do it. They typically will help sell their home, buy new home in Calgary, and a big chunk of relocation costs. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
If they offer you to move, but you don't take it or cannot take it... Do you quit? Or do you get packaged out? This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I don't know as I've never faced this issue before.
I'd guess packaged out. Your current position ends but they make available other opportunities. So severance or new position + relocation allowance I'd guess. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Pretty accurate math. Looks like the confirmed number is ~2,150 from the combined ~8,600 full time and contractor head count between the two companies. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

New position and relocation sound good but they often come with clauses that you cant leave for a couple of years or so regardless of what happens to your position and if you do then you have to pay back some or all of the relocation allowance.
I'm sure no one in the oil patch is going to be worried about paying back the relocation allowance. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
If anything, it's almost like more job security.
And if they lay you off after relocating you, you don't need to pay any of that back.
So a friend of ours got relocated to Calgary from Hamilton. Sounded like a sweet deal until his salary got cut 20% a couple of years back. He was told to suck it up or pay back 30K in relocation fees and find something new.
Yeah but was his salary going to get cut 20% regardless? Seems like 2 separate events unless he had a choice in the matter. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

The percentage of "interesting" in my job has been going down steadily since 2013. $/hr has been going down nearly that long too.

The percentage of "if you guys in town are so smart then why the fuck am I here" in my job has had a tremendous increase. And since I tell them that at inopportune times the percentage of "yeah why are you here" has matched that increase step for step.
