Projects that require casual cooperation and teamwork have definitely fallen by the wayside with WFH.

Actually I can’t recall a cross disciplinary project initiated in the last year that actually got done. Always some excuse or another.

I work at CVE - there has been no enforcement of cameras during meetings for the entirety of the pandemic/work from home order
I have a close friend who works at CVE. Within his small team they don't care about the cameras but when he is interacting with other teams (ie some of his scheduled weekly meetings) he said there are definitely people who make them turn the cameras on.

My wife's boss is the kind of person who tells everyone when layoffs are coming whereas the company I used to work for it was always a "surprise". I can understand both approaches, but my wife is a highly anxious person so all it really accomplishes for her is a week or more of no sleep and anxiety. I would much prefer he didn't tell her or her group.

My current boss has mentioned numerous times he prefers people to be in the office but also admits that is because he personally needs to have the separation of work and home so he wants everyone else to have it to. I am way more productive at home plus I save about 2 hours a day of commuting/parking so until I HAVE to be downtown I will be staying at home.

not great to see it coming, but not great to be surprised. Turns out it's not great to be laid off either way.

In a large company the secret will always get out, that's why the usually announce them, and a rough schedule, because otherwise it's just rumors and the productivity and anxiety is even worse.

Plus, some may just jump ship and save cost on layoff.

That's a big benefit if they do.

I dont know why anyone would do that with a 25% chance of getting massive money.

Because the opportunity to jump ship may not be there when the axe eventually drops. Workload is likely to increase after the axe even if you make the cut.

If you have 10+ years at an oil company making 150k per year it should be around a years comp, no?

I only have my previous experience from Telus I had been an employee for 3.5 years and I got 35K and my salary was well below 100k.

If you do get laid off while on covid do they send you your letter after your HR meeting?

I don't know the current standard, but I think it went down significantly over the last few years. Or that's the rumor anyway. more the 2 week/yr these days, or so my cousins brother's girlfriend said.

Our company is around 2-3 weeks per year of service when you get laid off. Previously it was 3-4 so it's definitely gone down over the years.

You could argue up to about a month per year of service but that will likely cost a lawyer and time and all sorts of other complications. You certainly won't get offered that off the hop.

Also, if you could jump ship now and get working you are still continuing you career somewheres else. If you get laid off how long is it going to take to find a job in this market? Severance ain't all that good if you aren't working for a year plus or you have to leave the industry.

I'm kinda in this boat, coming up on 12 years within an O&G company, would rather move into a comparable position/pay at a stable company than take the payout. To each their own though.

+1 - being in control of your own destiny is the way to go. if getting a payout aligns with moving to a new company, great, but I wouldn't sit back and hope.

Having a job is better than a payout and no job.

What companies would you move to though? Who is actually stable? All majors and super majors reduced headcount last year and I expect that 2021 will have more layoffs (on top of what's been already announced). How many projects in Alberta, Canada or globally were suspended or canceled? Even if you found a company to transition to, I wouldn't take that chance that your position is secure since it's easy to cut the new guy when a sudden round of layoffs in Q3 happen. Controlling your own destiny is easier said than done in O&G right now.

Presumably he means a different industry.

With comparable pay? That’s kind of dated thinking, no?

    I’d expect a 20% haircut.
