Unions will save us all. I have heard.
Although, I will admit, they seem to work great for some folks.

Shell has begun laying off a handful of people.
I thought they were offering voluntary layoffs earlier as well? Is this different?

Company wide? Or specific departments? Any idea on numbers?
Heard 110 as the final number. Also heard a good chunk were folks there for 10+ years.

Anyone know any pregnant people that got screwed by this? Didn't think companies would sink that low, unless they were actually poor performers in the first place.

That's illegal by labour law unless a ton of severance was paid. Not worth going there as a company.

Sink to what low? If a company is going through layoffs an employee being on Mat/Pat leave does not artificially protect them from a lay-off. Why should someone on mat/pat leave be protected over another employee? If they are let go they are paid the same severance as someone who was working.

Companies lay off people on mat leave all the time. It's actually reasonably common with non-woke old white guys who see pregnancy as some kind of disloyalty to the company and a mark of being unreliable or unsuitable for future promotions. I am not joking.

It does have some truths. My dept had 8. Now we're down to 5. With some staff doing double duty covering other positions

Well, yeah obviously there's some truth to it. Saying companies are using it as an excuse to get rid of people that were formally protected by human rights legislation is the part that made me

Not saying there was a worker that was on WCB light duties, thrown into our dept as they couldn't get rid of him legally, then was laid off, and then now perm laid off.....so perfect opportunity......but as for the pregnant part yeah I dunno. I posted it mainly for the other parts

As far as I know, as long as you don't rehire that role, and make sure the termination isn't due to mat leave, pregnant people can be laid off. It probably the last ones you want to act on tho and really carefully on dotting i's and t's.

At midlife, between a third and a half of all successful career women in the United States do not have children. In fact, 33% of such women (business executives, doctors, lawyers, academics, and the like) in the 41-to-55 age bracket are childless—and that figure rises to 42% in corporate America.
Children usually mean death to career for women. Unless that career involves and accommodate children. This especially true when they have their 1st. Most will automatically think she will have a second within next 5 years and immediate excluded from decision making roles. I have seen so many career focus women forgo mat leave and try to return ASAP to prove that they are reliable.
