The Alex is a good local program. My wife works in their Youth Health clinic and on their bus that does house calls to highschools. It's pretty rough what a lot of those kids are having to deal with.

    2022 BUMP

I'd like some new suggestions along these lines, please.
In the past, donations have gone to an organization that "won the lottery" the previous year because the United Way funded them and then they were completely buggered the next year when they failed to impress the UW-Oligarch.
Something of a direct, tangible need is the most desirable feature. The donors want to be able to point at a thing and say "my money paid for that".

I don't make the rules, I just live by them. It's also very likely that this will be a one-time funding opportunity, which again goes back to a physical item rather than a programme of services. (Although that's not off the table... I'm just stating success factors.)

Location priorities are Calgary > Alberta > Western Canada > Laurentian Canada > International.

Also please think of "teach a man to fish" rather than giving out fish.

Sorry for seeming picky. I just know what has been funded in the past and what flops. It's not my money. The donation will likely be between $10k and $50k.

    Thanks for your help!

I believe in supporting mental health and homelessness, so the Mustard Seed and Fresh Start Recovery Centre are usually on the list.

I used to drive for meals on wheels. They have the funding they need. I would advise against donating to them. They leaned heavily on their volunteers. They pocketed a good amount of their donations while asking the world of their volunteers.
We donate to the humane society regulaity. I would highly vouche for them

One of the themes for these donors is to give people a hand up, not a handout.
So if you consider a place that teaches or enhances the skills of the underprivileged in order to increase the person's employable value and self esteem, that's ideal.
Handouts are fine for the elderly. Homeless elderly people can't just "go get a job".

Animals are a no-go. Most animal shelters will care for and rehabilitate an invasive species, so their mandates are cloudy.

Seeing that today is International Womens Day, I suggest these two:
    - Women In Need Society, which works with women and families to provide housing and employment opportunities, as well as clothing etc.
    - Dress For Success Calgary - Provides clothing for interviews and employment, which is a huge barrier for women trying to join or re-enter the workplace

I second the Dress for Success Calgary.

Calgary Dream Center also may be worth looking into.

Wildrose community connections - is one close to me. They do a lot of young family programs, dad's central and the food rescues in the south of Calgary area.

What was the micro-loan site? Like GoFundMe but for ultra small business - going through there and just mass funding a bunch of "I need 300$ for a xyz" would make a massive difference to a lot of people too.
