    Default Best Charities in Calgary?

    Hello Beyond,

I was wondering what everyone thought were the best charities to donate to in Calgary? If anyone has any suggestions where my donation would have a large impact that would be appreciated. I want to avoid charities with high administration costs.

    Thanks!

Charity intelligence rates charities on effectiveness, overhead etc. https://www.charityintelligence.ca

The Calgary food Bank usually rates well.

Leftovers YYC. GF volunteers with them and they just got charity status - I really like their initiative.

Have a friend who started this charity and has been doing a great job with it, she's very driven and making a difference. The back story is really moving, someone we went to high school with passed away from cancer, her best friend was driven to do something in her honor and to help others, and all of these years later, she did it. I give about 5k plus various silent auction items (Jets tickets, etc.) in a year.

Lots of charities out there, let me know if this one interests you. Can message me privately also if you want.

If you have a school or community centre in your area without a playground, and you want to make a big donation with a big impact, a playground costs anywhere from $70-100k, and would change kids lives for the better.

IMO because Christmas is probably the hardest part of the year, I would donate to the veterans food bank. That's what I'll be doing this year. It might not be much but I'm hoping to make a small difference.

Yeah, veterans food bank, or the main food bank vank, are both excellent, high-impact local charities.

If veterans are an important issue to you, there's a few charities that focus on them, and the needs are big.

Me and the wife have always been a fan of the humane society, but I can see the argument about how there are better places for the dollar.

There aren't really any bad charities. You just need to find one that's meaningful to you.

I would have reservations about giving to a charity that has a 40% overhead or something.

But generally, agree. The best charity is the one that means the most to you.

Also, once you have found a charity to donate to, see if there is anyway you can make your dollar go further.

ATB has a program that will add an additional 15% to the amount you donate to the charity: https://www.atbcares.com/

Or the Birdies for Kids through the Shaw Charity Classic also appears to match up to 50% of the donations made, just make sure the charity you want to donate to is on their participant list.

and I did not have the only say in the matter (most people just want it done ASAP and don't care about quality).

If anything we made a better decision because we had a consensus and were all on the same page.

I don’t feel like anonymously (you don’t know who he actually is) asking about people’s opinions on charities is a cry for attention?

Lol that quote gave me a chuckle. Every time I see those self proclaimed philanthropists on tv or magazine interviews.

I donate to the Alberta Children's Hospital and Make a Wish cause I have family members whose lives have been impacted by cancer.

Thanks for suggestions. Just didn’t feel like donating to the usual children’s hospital, cancer foundation, and other big names this year. Nice to see some suggestions for other charities.

Lol, if I wanted attention I wouldn’t be looking for it here that’s for sure.
