The last two years has shown that the current regime is simply treating Canada like a banana republic. I'm not sure what kind of mental gymnastics one must perform to be convinced that Canada is a reasonable structure for representation for anyone, let alone the west.
Alberta fits the description of a banana republic better than anywhere in the country, including the country itself. Not sure why Wexiters keep clinging to the phrase.
They've got to cling to something and if that dies out then they'll just find another kitsch phrase. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

I actually didn't know that calling Canada a banana republic was a thing. Carry on.
https://nationalpost.com/opinion/her...nwYThem-vyoH_IThe rest of Canada has much more to lose from an independent Alberta than Alberta does, meaning it might make sense the rest of Canada to consider a fair deal for Alberta to keep Confederation whole. The rest of Canada stands to lose $20 billion in annual fiscal transfers from Alberta and $24 billion from lost interprovincial trade if it were no longer part of the federation.
Alberta, on the other hand, would lose $20 billion in interprovincial trade, but would keep an equal value in net taxes no longer transferred to the federal government. Should Alberta successfully negotiate a tariff with the rest of Canada that’s less than 100 per cent, then Alberta would see a net gain from independence.
But landlocked!
Instead of Alberta separating, can't we just kick out the eastern and atlantic provincial leeches? Let them fight over lobsters on their own.
I am still of the idea that if Alberta did separate. It would create the conditons to push at least two of the provinces to join (BC and SK) them. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Being land locked never stopped Kyrgzstan from being a Eurasian powerhouse.
BC would never do it. They would also be the biggest obstacle in anything AB wanted. Just look at pipeline and "their piece of the pie"This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Its either Ottawa decentralize more power down to the provinces, or they will separate to benefit themselves.
Its a shame that QC didnt fuck off in the 90s as it would have drastically reduced their permanent dependency on AB and also they would have absorbed massive amounts of their share of federal debt (which they never wanted to).

AB: FINE WE'LL MAKE OUR OWN COUNTRY. EVERYONE IS BULLYING US
AB: Hey BC want to join our new country?
BC: ....
Actual sophisticated people don't negotiate anything like this. It might play out as an emotional thing in the news because that's how the public wants to perceive such things. But at the end of the day, a bunch of adults can negotiate this stuff pretty cleanly and without emotion if they are permitted to do so.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. BC would not do it now. I agree. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
But I dont think it is a question of them wanting to do it. It is a question of BC being placed in a situation where it would be economically, and politically mutually beneficially for them to do so as they would be cut off from the rest of the federation if Alberta separates.
If Alberta separated. BC can either do a Bangladesh or join AB and form one union and share its resources.

Alaska and the biggest economy and military power in the world.
Vs BC and Eastern Canada. Is one seriously comparing the two to be identical?
