Default Would you buy and live in a home where a murder took place? (W/ poll)

I was thinking of this guy yesterday, Robert Raymond Cook of Stettler. He suddenly popped into my mind yesterday. I went to high school in Stettler and his name was routinely brought up because he was the last person to be executed for the crime of murder. Students talked about him a lot.

For those of you unfamiliar with the story, RRC brutally murdered his father, step mother and 5 half siblings in '59 and tossed their bodies in the garage grease pit. He was executed in 1960, the last to meet that fate in Alberta. (Wiki article at bottom.)

People always asked about the house the murders happened in, and who was living in it now. The house was actually demolishedsome time after the murders. I'm assuming because no one wanted to live in the structure. The developer built a 3 or 4 story apartment building on the lot. Most of the rooms were rentals IIRC, and many people I knew went on to live there when they moved out of their parents place after high school.

This brings me to my question... would you ever buy and live in a home where a murder took place?

I frequently see crime scenes on the news which show big, modern suburban homes, some of them almost new still. I doubt they are getting demolished. If they were listed for sale after, would you be inclined to buy it and live there?

For myself, I don't think I could do it, even if it was a smoking deal. I'd be constantly reminded of a violent crime taking place. Plus, trying to sell it later might be difficult.

Anyway, curious as to what you guys say.

100%. The only reason I wouldn't would be if it was gang related, because then there could be a mixup that physically hurt you.

Bullshit spiritual "the place is haunted" crap. Nope.

I guess another issue is that if serious blood was spilled, you'd have to do a lot of renovating. That would probably be my number 1 hangup, because I don't do reno's anymore.

I would be interested in the statistics of average % savings to be had before I lived in a murder house.

I don't believe in magic ju ju but I can see myself feeling unsettled living there haha.

Gonna go with a Maybe So.

I would bet most homes have way nastier things go down than spilling some blood on the carpet.

Have an distant relative son's murdered(shot) by his GF then she killed herself. It wasn't in the house but in the front yard by the front door. She tried selling but only had low ball offers so ending up keeping it. She still owns it today and rents it out. I've seen the house but never stepped foot in it but have stayed in their garage that was converted to a suite. As for buying and living in it long term, I'll pass.

This brings me back to the first American Horror Story season. I suppose it depends on the type of murder. A gunshot maybe but some sort of grisly slasher type of murder where blood was everywhere it would have to be a smoking deal.

If its significant amounts and it happens upstairs, that shit gets everywhere. Into the underfloor, into the floorboards, any insulation between the joists, etc etc etc.

I mean, I'm imagining basically a human body exploding. We hold a ton of liquids, it'd be pretty nasty.

I don't understand why anyone would be concerned with what someone else did at some other time in a building when it's completely unrelated to today.

Mmmm I’ve seen far too many horror shows and movies that I would likely pass haha. A house shouldn’t have a weird omen to it. Should be a place you can go and forget about everything, not think about weird creepy shit like grizzly murders etc... don’t really care how good the deal is

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest, but it might be harder to sell down the road as lots of people are superstitions/crazy/religious, etc. so your customer base shrinks.

People die in their homes all the time.

It wouldn't bother me. As said, all types of shit goes down in a house before you move in (if you're not the first owner).

Just asked my wife, and she said definitely nope, because it's creepy. I'd probably buy the house and just not tell her about what happened.

i think the older the story the less people would be concerned by it, so it'd probably be easier to sell as time passes.

But for me personally it wouldn't bother me, i guess it'd depend on the nature of what happened... if it was a slaughterhouse or if it was some old people who croaked naturally might have an impact on my feelings, but i dont think it'd bother me.

My current house was built in the 70's, its a 10 unit townhouse block, i am sure things have happened in there that i am unaware of..

I think max is joking haha. Of course it didn’t (beyond placebo effect). Well I guess I should clarify, bad luck, juju, vibes are a figment of the human imagination. So if you believe it works then it works because you believed it got rid of something your mind created in the first place. Similar to rich North Americans believing their prayers got answered meanwhile thousands of people praying to the same god died of starvation while you got your promotion or jimmy stayed safe on his ski trip

    I would with one caveat:
    - targeted murder - yea absolutely
    -random? Nope
