    Default Printing photos

We have a really big wall in our new place, that would look pretty great with a large landscape... I've got some pretty good panorama ones of the Icefields in Jasper, but curious about the quality I would have to be dealing with to actually get them to look half decent if printing to a 40x60.. If its even worth trying, or just buy some art

It's going to be hella expensive at that size.

EDIT: Actually just checked on Posterjack, at their regular price is $100 for that size on the regular paper. Plus they usually have 25% off often, with Boxing Day coming up probably more than that.

Honestly surprised but yeah, not bad...

Getting it in another format or framed will definitely get pricey.

That's actually a really good deal, believe it or not. The size you're looking at is huge, I'd really double check your measurements to be sure you're both going to be happy with it.

Lots of people are surprised by the cost of printing, canvas, framing etc. When you can go to Ikea and get a giant canvas for $30 or whatever, spending a few hundred bucks is hard to justify sometimes.

40 X 60 price isn't too bad, but it's a bit harder to get them pre-mounted at that size.

Most places will do up to 48" in any format and they aren't inexpensive ($265 for a mounted canvas for example, and you can often get 20-30% off).

Did 44Wide sell to Black's? That's what comes up every time I try to get to their website, and I don't recommending googling many other adjectives alongside "blacks"

What resolution are the photos? What camera did you take them with? What will the viewing distance be? Will it be displayed in a bright area?

There is lots to consider but you don't need 300ppi for a great print especially if it's going to be viewed at a distance. Canvas is very forgiving for example, and looks good even down to 70-80ppi as long as you aren't too close to it. If it's processed well and colors are accurate, it will probably look great. That last part is key though - I know people who have huge prints of horrible photos (poorly exposed, zero processing, etc.) and they look really bad.

Where are these places that will mount canvas at 40x60 for $265 + coupons? Stellar deal for sure.

Just my opinion, but I think canvas looks like garbage

the question first is whether the original image resolution is big enough to be printed that size and location it will be mounted and viewing distance.

If you are on a budget, then Posterjack is the way to go plus it is free shipping when over 100$.
If budget is not an issue and you want the best quality and control, then Resolve photo.

For example this was a 24x36 paper print from 24mp file.. cost was 300$ alone just for the print at Resolve Photo

And this was a 36x48 acrylic print taken also with a 24mp file, also around 300$ from Posterjack

I'll try and load the photo and post it when home, as well as the details on it. I am definitely not a professional at this so if it's not going to turn out well, then I dont want to do it.. where's the best place to load and add it here?

Yes, bought out by the online only blacks photos... blacksgallery.ca

As far as I know the metal prints will go to what used to be 44wide.

44Wide had acrylic mounts with Aluminum DiBond Backing Metallic Paper...expensive but was the cat's ass. Stunning really.

Apparently this place does it now...

What I said was 48" were that price less the usual 20-30% I was just looking at Posterjack. 60" are harder to come by depending on what you want the other dimension to be. I have 3 of them in that size and they turned out amazingly well - I have had 2 random people ask if they could buy a copy, and both asked me what it was printed on haha (it's obvious to you and I but not everyone I guess). You can't even really tell it's canvas unless you go up pretty close, and at these huge sizes, more than likely they are mounted higher up on a wall somewhere. If you want a 24" 300dpi gallery quality print, I would be using coated metal or paper.

Good canvas prints can look very nice IMHO. OP seems very concerned about source file quality and canvas is by far the most forgiving medium, hence the suggestion. It's also one of the more reasonably priced options. If it's not a perfect photo, canvas is going to help hide that fact. My go-to is coated metal but they will show every flaw, and at the sizes he wants they are very expensive.

Why is it you think canvas looks like 'garbage'? A properly done canvas print can look excellent in my experience - certainly better than an average photo on a different medium. But as I was saying earlier, a lot needs to be considered when choosing the medium, there is no universal best print medium.

If you go to Hawaii and walk the art gallery streets or to craft/market collectives here in Calgary, everyone trying to sell their photos is doing metal or acrylic these days and they shine really bright lights on them so they pop. I remember one place in Hawaii I was in, I asked how they did their prints and they said it was a secret, I turned it over and the Bay Photo branding was there

Thanks, I didn't know that. I guess so much for the deep discounts on metal haha.

You don't need to be a professional by any means. Just go to here:

    https://posterjack.ca/products/satin....4000244140625

Hopefully the settings stick. Anyways if you can upload the file, Posterjack will tell you right away if the resolution is sufficient (they call it Great/Excellent). If it's not high enough, PM me and I can blow it up in Photoshop if you don't have access.

Frankly at this size and sane budget, canvas or poster paper w/o frame are your options. Maybe Michael's could do a frame for you within some semblance of "reasonable" cost using their coupons, but I honestly can't say for sure.

Canvas is a personal preference as you can see in this thread. Lots of folks like it, I'm just not one of them.

I ordered 2 large metal prints from black's after they bought 44wide, quality was identical to my 44wide metal prints.

Where can I get a matted frame for a 16x24" family photo. I printed it from blacks on the metallic paper and it looks great. Way better than the framed prints ive previously purchased from posterjack. But now I need a frame. Hoping to keep it under $150.

Yeah Michael's is pretty good actually, especially when they have their 40 or 50% off sales.

I have had work done at Michaels and Prints Charming, and I found the latter to be stupidly expensive with zero advantage. They actually framed it with a fingerprint smugging the expensive K7 print, only after I noticed it and told them to redo everything, which they begrudgingly did. They did at no added cost, but I'll never go there again. Meanwhile Michaels has been very good and is half the price.

+1 for Michaels but it might be hard staying under $150. Their frames are ridiculously expensive unless you catch them on sale.

+2 Michaels, but only when the massive sale is on.

I haven't read the whole thread because lazy, but if you're anywhere near Edmonton go directly to Mill Creek Framing. Bring money, but get ready for excellent products and fantastic, quick service.
I have a pair of big pictures from there, 36"x24" and I think 20"x24" and they're spectacular.
