But really, the vivoactive from garmin is ~$50 more then the Fitbit versa and you get way more features and a far higher quality device.. The Fitbits are notoriously brutal for how often they just stop working, stop connecting to your phone or stop charging

Yeah, my friend bought herself and her three kids fitbits to encourage them to be more active. Three out of four died within a few months and Fitbit wouldn't replace or fix them.

Fitbits standard thing is to say 'oh no, well we'll give you %50 off the next one'..which is still more then they're selling them to retailers for.. brilliant really

@Brent.ff And that's precisely what I did. The issue with HR monitors built into the watch itself is that they have been proven to be off as much as 30 beats per minute which could be a bad thing especially if you are training in a cardio range. I guess that's why the class action against fitbit was successful in the US... I personally would only see it effective to check your resting HR.

This. My wife has been using her vivoactive for ~3 yrs now for tri training. A good fitness smart watch that allows for a lot more functionality should goals/requirements progress.
It does most of what my Forerunner 935 does at a fraction of the price.

With that being said - Garmins are always fitness first, smart watch second. Vs some others that are primarily smart watches with a few fitness functions.
Wrist HR - I leave it on to check my resting HR, but if I forget my chest strap I will turn it off for workouts as it will skew my target zones and metrics.

Ive even noticed that the wrist HR blows up if you're flexing your wrist at all (e.g., biking, holding ski poles, rock climbing, etc). Pretty well given up, except my resting HR (humble brag of 44 - more curious what the serious triathletes's is @CLiVE !?)

Garmin Vivoactive 3 is a good buy. ($249 at bestbuy is the best price I've seen). It has the majority of the features that most people use (minus the Triathlon specific mode and some advanced metrics).
And agree on Brent.ff's comments. The wrist hr is not reliable for actual training. For sleep / daily tracking sure...

The battery on my Garmin Forerunner 935 lasts about 10 days, or just over 17 hours of continuous activity.
2nd or 3rd on Vivoactive line. Still on 2017's Vivoactive HR. e-ink display, it can last almost a week on a charge if I'm being lazy. 3-4 days when I bike to work.

Built in GPS. HR not accurate but enough that to dial back or take it easy when I hit around 180bpm.

I rather have 4 days of battery life than having latest smart watch functions. I hate daily charging when I had a moto360. And the current gen of smart watch doesn't seem to stray far from that 3 years ago.

    You're essentially the walking dead.

Xtrema, can you get the ANT+ HR Strap for the vivoactive anyway?

    Pretty much.....

Yes, you can add all the ant+ sensors to the vivoactive line. My wife uses hers with HR strap, Bike sensors, stages power meter, etc.
The HR straps work well, but they don't last too long. ~1yr with daily use. The sensors just die over time.

Probably. Not a huge fitness buff, just need a bit of data and help self preservation so the standard Vivoactive HR is good enough for me.

I have an amazfit bip, its made by xiaomi, i've had it for well over a year now, i love it because if you turn off heart rate and use a watch face that doesn't have a seconds display you can get 45 days out of a charge, also syncs with google fit and other fitness apps

its cheap (sub $100) and pretty nice looking too

    Attachment 84375
    Sub 100$ ?? Where?

I'm so tempted with this one.

It's not the size that matters, it's the taste it leaves in your mouth.

I tried out this watch called "Amazfit Bip" and it was fairly decent battery life. Problem was, it was very shit in terms of customization, and I'm not sure how accurate the data from it really is. It's by a brand called "huami" and it's essentially an aliexpress/chinese knock off level experience. e!

Fck sorry guys, I swear I thought t was another watch lmao. I'm confused.

Anyway, thanks for your input everyone. The vivo by Garmin looks pretty dope. I'll try and see if I can find a lower price. It's about $260+ at the moment.

Thanks again for your help everyone
