    Default Lightning cable question

July this year I switched to Iphone. I've already gone through 3 lightning cables. I all my Android years I've never burned through cables so fast. They were not genuine Apple cables I got them from that little accessory store by the food court in Market Mall. Are lightning cables generally more prone to failure? Or is this just a case of, you get what you pay for?

You get what you pay for. Anything that isn't from Apple usually doesn't last long, I hope for 4-6 months from the ones I buy. I've never had an apple cable stop working in 8 years of Iphones though.

The genuine Apple cables are garbage. I've never had a cable fail until I started buying Apple products. You can read all day long on Apple forums about "why are Apple cables so fragile" etc. This is where they usually break: https://frayedlightningcables.tumblr.com/

Do yourself a favor and pay a fraction of the price for an Anker Powerline:

    https://www.amazon.ca/Charger-Anker-...ightning+cable

I have a bunch of these cables for multiple devices (Micro USB, USB-C and Lightning) and they are all like brand new still. Even the one in my car that gets abused like crazy shows no signs of wear. The Apple cable feels like a piece of thread in comparison haha. My Apple Lightning to USB-C cable failed on me within the very first week and my GF has been through so many I have lost count.

Apparently you can swap Apple cables at the store if they break because they don't have a serial number, but I haven't tried yet because I don't want another Apple cable.

Anker is good shit. I'm a fan of their products.

I've also had some decent experiences with Insignia lightning cables / micro USB cables from Best Buy.

Most of my 3rd party cheap ones fail within a month or 2. The only Apple ones I’ve had failed have either been run over by wheels on a chair or stepped on by the kids in the car. My cousin has these lightning cables from Hong Kong that are steel braided, she swears by them.

Buying from a mall kiosk, those cheap ones will last me a week haha.

I like Anker cables. I've used cheap eBay ones on my old HTC One S phone and I dunno WTF but the phone would get SUPER hot during charging and the port would smell like something was burning. After that I switched to Anker. Their customer service is awesome too. They'll send you replacements no questions asked and dont even need to send the old ones back

Well imagine if instead of writing that letter to the editor, she just posts on a car forum for car enthusiasts. That's Kritafo.

Bizarre than charging cables are now disposable.

Only the crappy ones. The good ones last years and years - in my experience the port changes before the cable fails unless you abuse them. I only recently got a rid of a bunch of mini-USB cables and some were ~15+ years old from my highschool days haha. I have over a dozen Micro USB cables that all look brand new and I am running out of devices that use that interface now too.

I read that Greenpeace successfully lobbied to make Apple make biodegradable cables - I am not sure if that's true or not but might be one reason why they are so fragile.

I buy braided lightning cables from Aliexpress for $2-$3 each, never had issues and they come in retail packaging. I have 5 or 6 of these already.

I have dozens of lightning cables sitting around the house. Not because I buy them, because everyone one that has ever come with one of my devices still works after years of buying their products.

    YMMV

There may be a serial number on the cable. My mother had two cables failed on her when she's travelling. When she brought one to the store somehow they were able to tell that it was the cable that came with the phone instead of the one she bought recently.

I've never had a cable failed on me since my first iPhone 3gs. I don't feel like I go the extra mile to baby them but I for sure don't abuse them like they are heavy duty.

Never had an apple lightning cable fail on me but then we have some everywhere in our house.
1-2 in the living room, 1-2 in the upper living room, 1-2 in the bedroom and we have dedicated lightning cable for travel.
My wife has killed 4-5 though but then she's on the phone all the time and uses it while charging.

I have also reinforced the lightning cable by applying sugru around the ends.

I've had my Belkin lightning cable in the car since the Iphone 5s that still works, cable started fraying so I wrapped tape around it.

Thanks for all the insight guys. My cables showed no sign of wear or fraying, they just quit. Since I don't abuse them I didn't see a reason to overcomplicate things. I was at the mall today anyways so I picked up a few from the Apple store. I kept the receipt, let's see how this pans out.

This is the best one i've personally used:
    https://www.monoprice.com/product?c_...seq=1&format=2

I've never had an apple one fail, but a couple of them have frayed (mostly the ones in my car since they get stressed the most).

If you can find the older versions Tronsmart is pretty good, nice thick 20awg cables. Usually affordable too.
    Cocoa $11,000 per tonne.

    +100. Great stuff
A Ferrari is a high maintenance chick, you spend money regardless of what you do with her. You can baby the C63, or slap on all seasons, and you won't be spending anything but yearly maintenance. Of course that's like dating a stripper and refusing to fuck her, which would make you gay.

But yea the only cable I ever use for it sometimes is a 6 ft braided one, no complaints
