it's not a tanker ban though. Hundreds of tankers will still go through the area. The exception are tankers carrying specific crude/chemicals from alberta are banned/restrictedThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

The other thing is how can tankers on one coast be dangerous enough to be banned when tankers on the other coast have a free pass? It's 100% aimed at the oilsands.

Sure oil doesn't stick around indefinitely that should be common knowledge there's plenty of natural oil seeps out in the wild and no pools of oil all over the place. The thing is that the impact of large oil spills is immediate and dramatic when it comes to fisheries or tourism. I'm all for the tankers but I am also under no illusion that an oil spill is not a really bad event. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I was being genuine. After looking into it more myself and at something longer-term (Exxon Valdez), it's a much better situation that I was under the impression of.
See the 2016 update:

There is still more research coming out. BP set aside $500 Million for Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative for everything research related post-spill.

You bet. Go walk along the Athabasca River inside Ft McMurray in the Summer and watch the tar seeping into the river. No human involvement needed. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Very interesting, makes sense though, many don’t even realize the gulf is littered with natural HC seeps (leaking in the ballpark of the DWH incident each year from the known seeps)This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
They did make the point though that the Candidatus Bermanella macondoprimitus bacteria can’t be readily removed from its native ecosystem. I imagine even something as basic as water temp would have a large impact, making Canada’s pacific coast a poor environment.
Good article, to be honest I never kept up with that other than the random article about lawsuits here and there
